@_martremblay I didn't read the book. I was bored and confused. I didn't laugh or cry. I was overjoyed when the movie ended though and I could go home. Hollywood has set the bar so low in the past 15 years (minus Pixar/Disney films), that people are easily impressed with a movie like PCH

I’m not one hundred percent sure how I feel about #ProjectHailMary—I think I expected more, thought I’d be more impressed, more amazed, you know that feeling that makes you leave your screening saying, “Wow, I love movies,” but alas. A 4.4 ⭐️ rating on Letterboxd set my expectations very high. But one thing is for sure: this film took me through a roller coaster of emotions, and I don’t even know how to explain how I felt. I laughed, I cried (at least four times), and sometimes both at the same time. I never thought I’d cry like that over a rock, but here we are. And Sandra Hüller (!!!) We need more movies with her, and she deserves all the recognition in the world. I can’t stop thinking about her rendition of Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” I was just bawling my eyes out in the cinema. So I had no choice but to drive home screaming the lyrics in my car. All in all, I’d say emotionally devastating (complimentary), but visually a little bit disappointing.

@Deadframex Yep. I'm confused by all the hype. I didn't read the book (because everyone said you didn't need to read it to enjoy the movie)....WRONG! I was bored and confused. Its the only time in a movie theatre that I kept checking my phone to see how much time had passed...

Hail Mary is that it’s basically a one man show. Gosling carries 85% of the film solo. The only film that’s remotely similar is Cast Away, and this is SO much better than Cast Away.

We do this at my office in Miami (The Osteopathic Center). This removed 20% of all the toxins from your body at once, over the course of 3.5 hours. That includes heavy metals, microplastics, PFAS and many more. Seeing the toxins fill up the bag is crazy!

@JohnJoh51520056 Yep...I looked at my phone 30 min in and inwardly cried because there were 2 hours to go. The best part of the movie was when it ended and I could go home. The worst experience I've ever had in a movie theatre.

@WVish_Official Tired of reading this kind of post about this movie. It is so boring! I saw a lot of people snoring inside the movie theatre and I’m one of those. I don’t know why it was so hyped. Yes there are good scenes but mostly it’s a boring movie

Yesterday I watched Project Hail Mary and I’m not even exaggerating, this could be one of the best sci-fi films I've ever watched. There is literally not a single dull moment. The film keeps moving, but in a very balanced way. The comedy is simple and cute("Amaze amaze amaze"), the emotional parts made me cry lol...that's rare, and the tense scenes are done so well that you stay fully locked in(Butt-Clenching). It never feels messy or over the top, everything just lands properly. What I really loved is how the film handles science. There’s a lot of complex stuff going on, but it never feels confusing. It explains things in such a simple and engaging way that you actually enjoy understanding it instead of feeling lost. I got to know that it is much more complicated in the books, but thank god they decided to simplify it in the movie. And then comes the best part… the relationship between Ryan and Rocky. I did not expect to get this attached. It’s so pure, so natural, and honestly very relatable in a strange way. The way their bond grows slowly just hits hard, and by the second half, I was fully emotional. Didn’t expect to feel this much. Also, Greig Fraser is just insane. Some of the frames in this film are genuinely beautiful. I don’t even know how he comes up with shots like that, everything looks so clean but still so grand. By the end, it really feels like one of those films that stays with you. It quietly hits you with the idea that good things don’t last forever, and no matter how much time you spend with people you care about, it never feels enough. I don’t know, this one just stayed with me. Definitely something I’ll keep thinking about for a long time. Fist my bump.

A big problem with Project Hail Mary: the science and engineering is so dumbed-down that it's borderline comical. Problems get solved almost magically, with no process or iteration. He meets alien life, shows it a clock, and five minutes later is having conversations. (His laptop magically translated the language, I guess.) Grace is charming (unbelievably so) but isn't shown as a good scientist. He's shown as a fantastically-lucky scientist. The Big Bang Theory had a similar problem, pretending to be a show for smart, techy people but mostly just winking at it. In other words it's pop science when the world desperately needs hard engineering to be celebrated. Still a good movie, but not nearly the classic it could and should have been.

@datrearden Many people don't want to read a 400 page book JUST to watch a 2 hour movie. People lied and said the movie is STILL enjoyable if you haven't read the book. I believed them. They were wrong. I was bored and confused. I was overjoyed when the movie was over and I could go.

@BenjaminDEKR Read the book. This is ironically a wildly dumb take, because your brain apparently isn’t capable of considering how a story must be parsed to create a commercially viable several hour screen product, at least not without being deliberately told to consider that.

Project Hail Mary review: 1: Best movie I've seen in quite some time 2: I wish I vibed with the Rocky/Grace humor more. I've not read the book since 2021 but from what I remember, I felt like the bulk of the comedic lines were between Grace and Stratt, not Grace and Rocky. Grace and Rocky had a more serious friendship in the book. Movie rocky feels like he is teetering on the edge of Big Bang Theory humor at times. 3: I was bummed we didn't get to watch them nuke antarctica 4: Them leaving out relativistic explanations for Grace not aging and Rocky having extra fuel was frustrating.
