On this day in 1964, civil rights activists James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were kidnapped, tortured, and killed by local cops and the KKK in Mississippi. Chaney was beaten and castrated before his death. Their bodies were found 7 weeks later.

@pickover No need to drag pi into the equation to figure out which pizza has more area. Simply see which of the two is greater: 2*(12^2) or 18^2. Since 18^2 is greater, it's the better deal. The shape of the pizza is irrelevant.

Mathematics. Mysterious universe. It is perhaps counter-intuitive that one 18-inch pizza has more pizza than two 12-inch pizzas.

@pickover My issue with John von Neumann is that he was on the target selection committee when the US was deciding which city in Japan to nuke in 1945. He voted for Kyoto even though it was of no military significance. So he wanted to incinerate civilians? Why?

Imagine that each one of these people could be returned to our world today, with another healthy and energetic 15 years of life. Which one would have the greatest contribution to mathematics or to humanity?

@andrewdoyle_com If law-makers would increase the severity of punishment for these types of crimes, they would not be as frequent. Currently it's just a slap on the wrist, so the protestors have no incentive *not* to do it.

Climate activists are at it again, this time spilling black dye into the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Commentators have noted that the dye could damage the fountain. How do they not realise that this kind of cultural vandalism undermines their cause?

@ProfFeynman Whether something is a "fact" can be hard to ascertain, especially when it comes to politically or socially sensitive subjects. People will say "It is a fact that this is true and here is the evidence!" Response: "That evidence is from a biased source, it total BS, try again."

One of the signs of intelligence is to be able to accept the facts without being offended.

@pickover @bryceguy72 Same question, with only 1 obvious answer. ie the Earth is applying an accelerating force to A and B, but does not impact their relative velocity at any instant.
