@shadesofsilver I’m curious what the actual addressable market of low competitive multiplayer is. I feel like we’re not at true saturation. Especially considering folks love for idle-ish experiences like fantasy football

@buddingmonkey Well the business types love comp-multi cuz of the live service model, including revenue from cosmetic sales, brand partnerships, or potential esports scene. There's saturation in both, but the co-op feels less inundating since none are trying to take over your life.

Everyone saying "Friendslop" is gonna die out & indies shouldn't trace trends... IDK honestly. It's the new couch coop & the market's been lamenting that loss for two generations. The demand has been there since before Day One & I don't think it's going away.

If you're building for VR, build something so good that people buy a headset purely to use your thing.

VR’s narrative is being set by people who don’t build in VR, don’t spend time in VR, and don’t see the small teams quietly winning. VR’s best news happens in huge Discord servers, not on social or news articles. Jump into the culture for the good news.

@CitizenZ_1000 As Meta, rec room, Roblox, second life, VR chat, PlayStation home, dreams, core, Fortnite, and countless others have shown this tech is expensive to build. Without mass market adoption or government investment it’s not worth the effort. Your use case is not compelling enough

@buddingmonkey I don't see why a quest 3 or AVP cant display, albiet from more powerful hardware, a scene that augments a real place with simple, Immersive scene relighting and material handling. We can do lights and materials, now augment real scenes, and make better hardware.

@buddingmonkey I see the (social?) gaming side of the internet as your definition of the metaverse. I was supposed to be able to go places in real life with VR hmd augmenting the world to scenerios me and my firends want to take part in by now. Or at home! We got shit on by meta/apple.. reality

@buddingmonkey @nypost Maybe, but this ‘confession’ sort of implies she doesn’t do it often. She tried for two hours to not give her kid a screen. Not necessarily trying to drag her, I don’t know anything about the show or her. I do think screen use for kids under two is bad for them.

@nypost The fucked up part is that personal screen use (phones, tablets - both in children and their parents) is becoming by more and more correlated to speech and other developmental delays. Ms. Rachel probably doesn’t let her kid watch Ms. Rachel videos.

@vasuman The problem wasn't middle management, it was that "young people" were the wrong target. Gen Z already had their metaverse it's called Roblox. What real legs did it have that Roblox didn't already own?

As someone who worked at Reality Labs: the Metaverse had real legs but was obliterated by middle management completely out of touch with how young people actually use technology. I built a V1 tool that game developers genuinely needed, and the moment it was done, it got shipped to a team in London (to die), and I was reassigned to a "higher-priority project" that zero developers asked for. Multiply that by every team, and you'll understand why this never took off yet cost 80 billion.

@shadesofsilver The talks were full again, which had been declining for years. I heard about some investment seeking, but based on my networks most studios that didn’t have investment for all of 2026 shut down or laid folks off in Jan.

@buddingmonkey Really tough to compare. It was good to streamline the passes, but it seems like the show has become less about finding a job or investment. Looking on LinkedIn, I can't really tell what the benefit was. Lots of just "Another GDC in the books!" mixed w/ doom & gloom.

Seen much speculation but I'd like to point something else out: This was the first time in years there were no crypto-related talks. Maybe there always were 20k gamedev attendees, but also 10k techbros looking for get-rich-quick ideas and investments.
