One of the best forms of networking is coffee chats. Trying to get your very first job as a software developer and trying to network more? Coffee chats. How many coffee chats are you doing? A common rebuttal I hear from juniors is "I can't get a coffee chat with people." To which I reply, how many coffee chats have you had with other beginners trying to break in? It's practice, but it is also networking. In a year from now, they will be in a completely different place in life. Maybe they could give you the insight or referral you need in some where. But it is also great practice to get in there, practice your elevator pitch and whatnot. It's interesting: if you go to a university on the business side, people constantly stress how important it is to network, but in tech, people mention a little, but they don't really press upon it. NETWORK! Build up that network. get in conversations, be a real person, and don't try to pitch them on why they need to hire you right away. Just have a good conversation. I see success stories every single day! You never know where one conversation can take you.
