I’ve struggled to understand how so many Americans have missed out on the basic fact: When you sell a commodity and your competitors are taken off line, this is good for your business. The Americas have massive oil reserves, just waiting to be tapped into and unlike the rest of the major oil nations, we are not in a conflict zone. Our massive reserves are not only good for the energy sector, they also make our industrials far more competitive globally.

I honestly thought this map was made up Hundreds of supertankers, the kind that carry two million barrels each, are currently racing toward the US Gulf Coast from every direction. Atlantic, Indian Ocean, around Africa, the scenic route, the "we were heading to Saudi Arabia but NVM" route. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and everyone panicked. Oil hit $126 a barrel. Gas hit $4 a gallon. Cable news did the thing where they put a red banner on screen and say "CRISIS" in a font that suggests you should be hoarding toilet paper. And then something happened that nobody in media seems interested in reporting, for obvious reasons. The world just... switched suppliers? Like changing your internet provider except the internet provider is the entire effing global energy economy. American oil exports are approaching record levels. Gulf Coast refineries are running at 95% capacity. Supertankers that were mid-ocean on their way to the Persian Gulf literally turned around and headed to Texas. That's not a metaphor. Ship tracking data shows them doing U-turns in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile China, which was getting 45% of its oil imports through Hormuz and paying basement prices for sanctioned Iranian crude, is now competing with Japan and Europe for the same expensive American barrels. Chinese manufacturers are already raising prices 20% on goods headed to the US. So to summarize: Iran played its biggest card and the main result is that the United States became the world's emergency gas station and China's cheap energy subsidy evaporated. This is either the most elaborate coincidence in the history of geopolitics... or someone planned the sequence Venezuela -> Iran -> profits! I'll let you figure out which one

I would argue that social justice (a misnomer) is creating a growing number of conflicts to this important constitutional tenet. Like the 2nd amendment (or Washington's Article 1, section 24) this is one of those that is trampled on by the state at its leisure.

One of my favorites in the Washington Constitution: Article 1 SECTION 12 SPECIAL PRIVILEGES AND IMMUNITIES PROHIBITED. No law shall be passed granting to any citizen, class of citizens, or corporation other than municipal, privileges or immunities which upon the same terms shall not equally belong to all citizens, or corporations.

Civilization was built by people like this, and there is a stunning lack of gratitude in our culture for their work. In this specific case, at least half of the apple varieties in Brown’s collection were considered “lost” until he personally tracked them down and saved them. He literally went on quests where he did things like, tracking a lost variety back to a stump of a long-ago-cut-down tree near an abandoned homestead in remote Appalachia, took cuttings from the green shoots coming out of the stump, brought them back and planted them. Absolute legend.

As in tax dollars that they themselves put into circulation first to be able to then collect? Tax dollars that you wouldn’t have in hand at all unless it had been spent first into the private economy via public spending? Those tax dollars? 😂 You haven’t thought about this very much have you.

FDA just loophole'd "No Artificial Colors" labels. Only petroleum dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2) now count as "artificial." Everything else — including titanium dioxide (banned in the EU) — gets a free pass. Don’t fall for it. Still junk inside.

A legal challenge to Washington’s newly passed “millionaires tax” has been filed in rural Klickitat County, setting up what could become the first major court test of the state’s effort to impose an income tax on its highest earners. The complaint was filed more than 200 miles from the state Capitol in Olympia, positioning the small south-central Washington county as the starting point in a potentially lengthy legal battle. Former Republican state Attorney General Rob McKenna has joined with Democratic former state Supreme Court Justice Phil Talmadge, along with rural farmers and the Citizen Action Defense Fund, to challenge the law, which was signed last week by Governor Bob Ferguson. The legislation imposes a 9.9% tax on individuals earning more than $1 million annually. MORE: bit.ly/4cm0w5K

It's easy to misunderstand fat storage in tissues. Not all fat, even if stored in tissues like the liver or muscle, is harmful. Most fat that is stored in the muscle, for example, is in the form of triglycerides. Yes, people with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes often have much higher levels of muscle triglycerides than others. However, lean, insulin-sensitive endurance athletes also have a lot of triglycerides in their muscle. This is known as "the athlete's paradox". But while triglycerides are inert (when it comes to insulin resistance), a different type of fat is the real culprit. Ceramides, which can be formed in response to stimuli like chronically elevated insulin, cortisol, or inflammation, are a direct cause of insulin resistance in tissue.

Here's a thing I have come to believe: It should, basically, be illegal to increase the cost of a subscription on auto-renew accounts without actively gaining the consent of the customer—and I don't just mean by offering a button that says "I accept." thebulwark.com/p/one-easy-pro…

When a college tells a 17-year-old student that his (overheard) lawfully-held views expressed in a private conversation are “ideologically abhorrent”, and issue a formal written warning for gross misconduct (“harassment”), it is an abuse of process which is itself harassment. Educational freedom permits (and should foster) the expression of unpopular or ‘offensive’ opinion. The ability to deal with it is a measure of academic leadership.
