@SubriaWhitaker Yes, the WBL was issued registrations for the Shock and Rockers names without opposition. The WNBA later filed its own applications anyway. For DET it was refused and the WNBA recently asked for an extension to amend it. For CLE, the WBL is opposing the WNBA's app (ongoing).

@ArthuronSports Not settled. The Rockers mark is still being disputed with the trademark office. The trademark office denied the WNBA’s application for the Shock (because the other company had it already) so the league will have to challenge that or amend their application.

@CallMichele No, it's not the same company. The Delaware LLC only applied for the Comets. A different company called The Women's Basketball League got the Shock and Rockers names.

@_JackKeating The WNBA filed its new applications in early 2025 for the Comets, Rockers and Shock. The issue is more why they didn't upkeep the registrations in the first place, because they are useful regardless of whether or not they anticipated those teams returning.

@taelorjae_ FYI, you don’t have to have an approved registration to use a mark. But if *someone else* already has registered or applied to register that mark for the same goods and services, that’s a big no no. That’s what is happening with the Comets, Rockers, Shock.
