I played elementary school, middle school and high school basketball, little league, all stars, Babe Ruth league, High School, American Legion, college and pro baseball. All were great experiences and I had my share of struggles. But through it all My family never once said a negative thing to or about a single coach or one of my teammates in my entire career. That was then and this is now. Now I am a coach. So even after all the years of playing and coaching I get the pleasure of hearing from 1-2 concerned parents a month. Not concerned about the team or development. Just concerned about their child. They feel the need to explain to me how when I, along with 4-5 other coaches leave their real job early to feed the team, throw BP, go through early work so kids are prepared before we go to a game that after all that and 100 days of practice and 30 games that somehow I’m making career altering mistakes with their son by how often he plays, where he bats in order, what position he plays and what teams he has to pitch against. These people get bad information from PAID “coaches” that do very little outside of cheerleading and cashing checks for instruction that does not produce the desired effect they pay for. Which should be success on the field. There’s no shortcut to being a good baseball player. Walks, pitch counts per inning, pitches per batter and arm injuries are at all time highs. How many innings can you throw or wins will your team get if you allow a crooked number every inning? Start from the start. Solid mechanics. An intent to attack the zone. Challenge hitters with “your” best stuff and give your team an opportunity to win the inning and the game. If you are great you’d be stacking up zeros in your outings and not 25+ pitch innings against kids that went to another PAID instructor that can’t hit. The more pitches a quality hitter sees in an at bat increases his chances of getting hits. If pitching gurus actually care about their student they’d understand mechanics comes first and adding velocity comes at a normal pace with hard work, long throwing and getting in the weight room every chance you get. But can’t charge 100$ an hour for that. There’s no shortcuts to being great. In my coaching career I’ve watched many kids touch 95 in high school. All but 1 has ended up on an Orthopedic Surgeons to do list before college. Every bit of the bitterness and struggles I see are from short term unrealistic goals. Get outs for your team. But Misery loves company and youth and high school athletics brings out the worst in people. Sit down , cheer for the team and tell your child if he doesn’t like his role, he should work harder on the things that are causing the struggle. Teach them to compete. Fight for greatness and that Having meetings with coaches doesn’t change the reality of what they are struggling with. I’ve played and coached baseball for over 40 years now and I’ve never ran across a coach of any team at any level that doesn’t bust their ass to win and help their players reach their potential. So parents take it from a former player, current coach and dad. Soon they’ll be no more games. The players will have good days and bad. But 10-15 years from now they’ll only remember the good ones. Unless a parent makes it their mission to remind them of the bad. Because believe me It’s all over in a flash. Each season becomes a blur and if you don’t try to enjoy it you’ll look back and regret it. I know I do.

Seeing a worrying trend unfold in varsity baseball lately. Over the past month, I’ve witnessed an unsettling number of head coaches stepping down, not for typical personal reasons but due to excessive parental interference. Speaking to one of the departing coaches, he confided his preference to resign rather than surrender control of his program to overbearing parents. This raises a crucial question: What’s happened to the core principles of hard work and perseverance in sports? Are we so caught up in our own entitled ambitions that we’re willing to disrupt and potentially ruin these vital developmental experiences for others? It’s high time we take a step back and consider the lessons we’re teaching our young athletes. We must encourage them to embrace challenges and adversity, as these are the very experiences that shape resilient, capable adults. Life is not going to coddle them, and neither should we. Let’s restore integrity and independence to the game and let our coaches coach.
