Our final throwback video of the offseason! 🎥 1972 Somerset vs Lafayette 🎥 🗓️ October 6, 1972 — The 4-1 Briar Jumpers traveled to Lexington and dominated from the opening kickoff to take down Lafayette 24-14! Head Coach Ron Cain was ejected just before halftime. His brother and assistant coach, John Cain, took over head coaching duties for the remainder of the game - foreshadowing John Cain’s eventual tenure as Somerset’s HC where he would rack up a program record 145 wins. Jack Logsdon got the scoring started with a 24-yard interception return for a TD. All-state halfback Mitch Gaines scored on a 56-yard run in the 2nd quarter before QB Jim McCarty’s 13-yard score capped off a night that saw Somerset rush for over 250 yards. The Briar Jumper defense allowed just 143 total yards, forced 3 turnovers and a safety and pitched a 2nd half shutout vs the Generals. Somerset played Lafayette every season from 1949-1972, and this game remains the last time the schools have faced each other on the football field. #Team66 // #HistoryAndTradition
