Brilliant question. One economists have been thinking about for as long as there has been economics. Hard to answer succinctly. And there are differing views. But, to attempt an answer [health warning - former central banker]...

Question for the media (not for myself):do you really think that this government's money is exactly the same kind of money that people earn (or borrow) and spend? ie this government can only spend what they 'earn' (ie get from tax) or borrow? Or is there something else going on?
