@Grauno i tend to use "anime" as an indicator of the art style, rather than the location of the storyboard artists. if i'm aware that it came from someplace other than japan, i'll preface it with "korean anime" or "chinese anime", but in the end, it's all cartoons to me lol.

@ecchiGamer Its also worth pointing out, canadian, western european and australian shows are also usually referred to as cartoons. I am not educated or articulate enough to define it but there clearly is a big difference in style and design philosophy that differentiates anime and cartoons.

i use "anime" and "cartoon" interchangeably, however, there are non-japanese people who get VERY defensive and angry about how "anime" is used.
some people will act like they've been gravely insulted if you use the wrong word.

@Grauno i've got animated content from many countries, even one from serbia. people are going to be confused though if i say "i saw a great crtani filmovi the other day".
there's no confusion at all if i call it an anime or a cartoon though, even though it's not from japan or the us.

@Grauno so what would you call shows like voltron and robotech? are those anime or cartoons?
they were produced by american companies from reused footage that was dubbed over and changed substantially from the original material. but the material they used was made in japan.

@ecchiGamer No, on the front of production, I think it's absolutely safe to label them according to where the lead staff is. I know a lot of animation is outsourced but that has almost no bearing on the look and feel of the finished product.

@Grauno it would be easier to stick to region-specific labels if producing shows wasn't such a messy process that often involves international collaboration.
it becomes this weird debate about how much of the process is handled in a specific country to determine what we should call it.

@ecchiGamer It's not wrong but they will usually add western like they do to differentiate between national rock and overseas rock, or call them "cartoon" like in the west.
Calling anime cartoons throws me off a little a bit but I also don't think its big enough a deal to raise an issue tho

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Hannah Montana Linux, is in fact, Hannah Montana GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Hannah Montana plus GNU/Linux. Hannah Montana is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another proprietary-themed component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
