SITREP: U.S.-Iraq Relations, Zaidi in U.S. (General Access) ICOD: 12:30, 07/14/2026 BLUF: Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is in Washington, D.C. today to meet with U.S. President Donald J. Trump, against the backdrop of ongoing crackdowns in Iraq against corruption, that also serve as a power consolidation effort for Prime Minister Zaidi. Zaidi hopes to attract continued U.S. investment and support, amidst a tenuous time for U.S.-Iraq relations. The actions of Iranian-backed groups in Iraq have induced the U.S. to apply significant pressure on Iraqi decision-makers to mitigate the influence of such groups within Iraqi decision-making and security circles. Analyst Comment: In the past, Iraqi principal decision-makers have walked the tightrope of balancing U.S. and Iranian influence in the country, but the escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict and the activation of Iranian-backed non-state actors (I-B NSA), especially those subordinate to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) brought the issue to the forefront of U.S.-Iraqi dialogue. Judgement: It is likely that Zaidi, as mentioned in his statement this morning, will hope to further U.S. investment and cooperation in efforts, such as new pipeline efforts and energy ventures, in return for some level of continued mitigation efforts against I-B NSAs. However, as already seen with recent Iraqi government efforts to consolidate governmental control over groups like the PMF, it’s highly likely that I-B NSAs with continue to push back against such efforts, posing a considerable challenge to any efforts to mitigate Iranian influence in country. End.

The attack marks the latest escalation in the rapidly expanding regional conflict. Over the past several days, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against multiple Gulf states, while the U.S. has carried out three consecutive nights of strikes on Iranian military targets following attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. With the U.S. naval blockade of Iran set to resume today at 4p.m. ET and commercial maritime traffic transiting the Strait of Hormuz remaining severely reduced, the risk of further regional escalation continues to grow.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi told reporters today that “U.S. forces will be out of Iraq” by September 30 of this year. As of right now, in line with the agreement announced in 2024 by the Higher Coordinating Committee, U.S. forces are largely sequestered to areas within Iraqi Kurdistan region, with the next tranche of withdrawals scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.

According to Axios, citing both U.S. and Israeli officials, in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Thursday, U.S. President Donald J. Trump told him that the Israel Defense Force (IDF) should begin to withdraw forces from both Syria and Lebanon. Per the report, President Trump warned that the risk for escalation, particularly with the IDF’s presence in Southeastern Syria, is high, with Trump telling his Israeli counterpart “They don't want you there. You should redeploy.” Prime Minister Netanyahu has pushed back, saying that security zones in both countries are necessary. This comes as Israeli and Lebanese diplomats met in Rome today to discuss continued cooperation on the gradual Israeli withdrawal and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s announcement during a visit to the Czech Republic that the IDF was preparing to withdraw from 2 pilot zones in Southern Lebanon.

Air raid sirens are sounding across Bahrain amid indications of another Iranian missile and/or drone attack targeting the Gulf kingdom. Bahrain hosts the headquarters of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet and has been repeatedly targeted during the current escalation, making it one of the primary locations for Iranian retaliatory strikes against U.S. and coalition interests in the region.

President Donald J. Trump has issued a lengthy statement on Truth Social declaring that the Strait of Hormuz is now open to all commercial shipping except vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports or carrying Iranian cargo, crediting recent U.S. military operations with restoring freedom of navigation. Trump said the U.S. will maintain a full blockade of Iran, warning that the country's leadership is leading Iran down "the path of TOTAL DESTRUCTION." He also announced he is abandoning the proposed 20% "United States reimbursement fee" floated yesterday, saying it will instead be replaced by trade and investment agreements with Gulf states. The statement comes after three consecutive nights of CENTCOM strikes against Iranian military targets, ahead of the formal resumption of the U.S. naval blockade, and amid continued Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and heightened military activity across the Gulf.

🚨🇮🇱The Netanyahu coalition just passed in the Knesset a law that grants immunity from arrest to tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox draft evaders. The immunity will be in effect at least until after the October election and shield the voters of Netanyahu's coalition partners
