Footage, reportedly taken during Iranian drone and missile strikes against Kuwait earlier, shows a Shahed-136 impact. The U.S. continues to trade strikes with Iran, as targets inside Bahrain and Kuwait are now bearing the brunt of Iranian fires.

SITREP: U.S.-Iraq Relations, Zaidi in U.S. (General Access) ICOD: 12:30, 07/14/2026 BLUF: Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is in Washington, D.C. today to meet with U.S. President Donald J. Trump, against the backdrop of ongoing crackdowns in Iraq against corruption, that also serve as a power consolidation effort for Prime Minister Zaidi. Zaidi hopes to attract continued U.S. investment and support, amidst a tenuous time for U.S.-Iraq relations. The actions of Iranian-backed groups in Iraq have induced the U.S. to apply significant pressure on Iraqi decision-makers to mitigate the influence of such groups within Iraqi decision-making and security circles. Analyst Comment: In the past, Iraqi principal decision-makers have walked the tightrope of balancing U.S. and Iranian influence in the country, but the escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict and the activation of Iranian-backed non-state actors (I-B NSA), especially those subordinate to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) brought the issue to the forefront of U.S.-Iraqi dialogue. Judgement: It is likely that Zaidi, as mentioned in his statement this morning, will hope to further U.S. investment and cooperation in efforts, such as new pipeline efforts and energy ventures, in return for some level of continued mitigation efforts against I-B NSAs. However, as already seen with recent Iraqi government efforts to consolidate governmental control over groups like the PMF, it’s highly likely that I-B NSAs with continue to push back against such efforts, posing a considerable challenge to any efforts to mitigate Iranian influence in country. End.

@BinSilentEyes If you’re into literature on the Eastern Front, I highly suggest giving Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands a read.

The attack marks the latest escalation in the rapidly expanding regional conflict. Over the past several days, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against multiple Gulf states, while the U.S. has carried out three consecutive nights of strikes on Iranian military targets following attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. With the U.S. naval blockade of Iran set to resume today at 4p.m. ET and commercial maritime traffic transiting the Strait of Hormuz remaining severely reduced, the risk of further regional escalation continues to grow.
