The success of GLP-1 agonists (Ozempic) is being used to make a well-intentioned but VERY flawed argument. The argument goes like this: These drugs are very successful. Trying to lose weight through willpower and life change is not. Therefore, weight gain/loss is not about willpower or life changes. It is a “biological” problem, to be solved with medication. This is deeply misguided. There are many, many things that are difficult to do, for which pharmaceutical interventions are very effective. To suggest that therefore these are purely physiological issues makes no sense.

@mbeisen I don’t understand the basis for your statement. What leads you to believe that scientists are worse that non scientists in this regard?

I was always led to believe that scientists are inherently skeptical. But one of my most disillusionary discovery is that they are - broadly speaking - even more credulous than non-scientists when it comes to politics and culture. It genuinely makes me question the entire enterprise.

@NIHDirector_Jay @NIH As an independent researcher, I do NOT have that access, even though my tax dollars went into it. Typically, I have to pay $10-$20 per page of government funded research that resides behind academic publication paywalls. This is a disgrace.

All @NIH employees and scientists continue to have and will continue to have full access to all scientific journals including those published by Springer Nature through the NIH library and the National Library of Medicine.
