@maniac_lite @fesshole It's not so much about the skill as the opportunity. I don't encounter a lot of wet concrete in my line of work.

I work in construction in the U.K. I also holiday several times a year in foreign countries. Every holiday involves me bringing some stones back and placing them in wet concrete. It's my little way of bringing some of the world together.

@anon_opin You're the one getting it wrong. In the US "Lego" is treated as a regular countable noun: "one Lego", "two Legos". In the rest of the English-speaking world it is a mass noun: "a pile of Lego", or an adjectival noun : "Lego bricks". Nowhere is "Lego" used as a plural: "two Lego".

The plural of Lego is Lego, not Legos. Really don't know how people are still getting it wrong at this point.

@faoljew @maitiumacriceid Requiring anything other than a simple majority would be worse. Imagine 59% of people vote for Irish unity and it's denied them. How would that be fair? Brendan O'Leary's book "Making Sense of a United Ireland" is a great read on this topic.

@maitiumacriceid Yes if there's one lesson we can take from Brexit it's the dangers of taking these momentus decisions on a knife edge vote. Obv democracy means any ref has to be set to 50%+0.1 but you'd want the launch of a new country to have closer to 60% public buy in

@Snowdrops21 @anon_opin Wearing them too low. The gusset wears out because it's constantly rubbing against the thighs instead of being tight against the crotch.

@RachelMoiselle The article is behind a paywall but the picture illustrates part of the problem. The headline talks of antisemitism while the caption on the photo is about someone who was dropped as an election candidate because of their political views. Those things should not be conflated.

Hello, all. This is a long but very important post. Over Yom Kippur I read this harrowing Times article. I implore everyone to read. It details serious institutional discrimination and societal contempt for Jews-particularly Israeli Jews-in this country. Some of these details the Jewish community globally will relate to: ‘families and friends of years who have turned on us’. Others illustrate the specific dangerous nature of antisemitism in Ireland. It is a hatred that permeates society from the top down and is embedded in public sectors. Unlike in other Western nations, there are no civil rights organisations that Jewish people can trust to pursue justice for the discrimination they face. The most disturbing account in this piece is what happened to a Jewish Israeli woman, Bar, who experienced a high risk pregnancy with many complications directly due to the stress and anxiety antisemitism in Ireland caused her. She was told she she needed a C section within 48 hours to bring the baby out a month early. A female doctor harassed Bar about the Israel/Palestine conflict during this consultation. Bar details how her eldest son, who is seven, has also experienced antisemitism here. He faced severe bullying by his football teammates for being Israeli. Disturbingly, his coach partook in this. Bar and her family are now back in Tel Aviv due to this antisemitic discrimination. They are not the only people I know who have moved out of Ireland due to this hostile environment. I heard Bar recount this horrifying situation in person at our meeting with the Tánaiste, one held to address the hatred being faced by Ireland’s tiny Jewish population. I remember distinctly one woman at the meeting said, ‘we wouldn’t be here if we didn’t have hope’. Hope, that is, of things getting better. Months later my hope wanes. The situation has drastically escalated for the worse: an antisemitic conspiracy theory spread by our head of state and endorsed without question by our heads of government; antisemitic tropes, Holocaust inversion, and bald racism spouted by councillors, senators, and news presenters with little repercussion; the Protocols sold in arguably the most prominent bookstore Dublin; celebrations by three separate extremist groups on the first anniversary of October 7th. I read this article and thought to myself: ‘this is not who we are, this is not what Ireland is’. On reflecting further, I had a sobering moment acceptance: it is who we are. Perhaps it is how we have always been. Experiences my own ancestors faced make the case for this. In the spirit of Yom Kippur, on behalf of Ireland I am sorry to the Jewish community for what you have experienced here. And I am sorry that this may be the only apology you ever receive in this country, where the world’s oldest hatred is inverted as righteous. I am so very sorry.

@libertystrikes2 @darachos The point of libraries is to educate people. Now you have heard of her. So, if nothing else, the name change has already educated you, and you didn't even have to set foot inside a library.

Why does inheritance tax exist? People earned this money and paid tax on it already when they were alive, why should their kids who can't even afford a front door, never mind a house, pay tax on top of this again?! #rtept

@paddymacc1 But that's not the main issue. He could have been upset about the colour of the uniform or the font used in school emails and it wouldn't have turned out any differently. His behaviour got him suspended and then fired. His subsequent behaviour got him jailed - repeatedly.

No matter how you look at it, the main issue is that he declined to use pronouns for a student and, in my view, was wrongfully suspended. Starting the story in the middle to change the plot is simply spinning it to suit a narrative breakingnews.ie/ireland/fact-c…

@wolsned Arrested for trespassing in defiance of a court order. The reason he's decided to trespass is indeed his obsession with "transgenderism" but that is of absolutely zero interest to the courts.

@fesshole If you list random places names you'll probably get the wrong ticket or a confused look. If you simply say the name of where you're going then you'll get the right ticket. That's probably what you're actually doing.

@GolferOcd @CilComLFC It's hard to see how we could do worse. Conor embarrasses himself and shames his country every time he opens his mouth, or assaults an innocent person. He's a thug and a populist with no idea what the role of president entails and none of the competencies needed for it.
