The Man Who Proved Stephen Hawking Wrong In 1974, Stephen Hawking proposed that black holes evaporate over time through Hawking radiation. He argued that as a black hole disappears, the information about everything that fell into it is lost forever. Susskind countered that if information could truly be destroyed, the fundamental laws of physics—specifically unitarity in quantum mechanics—would break down. He and Michael Peskin calculated that if Hawking were right, space would instantly heat up to billions of degrees. By 2004, evidence from the AdS/CFT correspondence and the holographic principle became overwhelming. Hawking publicly conceded the debate, admitting that information is likely preserved and returned to the universe in scrambled form as a black hole evaporates.
