*sadly I can't locate a vintage matchbook from the Warrior, but I bet they were spectacular. A couple of other surviving Sioux City gems: the Prairie Style Woodbury County Courthouse (1918) and the Native American-themed moderne Badgerow Building (1933)

The matchbooks from earlier today got me thinking about the Warrior Hotel in Sioux City. It opened in 1930, closed in 1976, miraculously went undemolished for over 50 years, and was restored to its former glory in 2020. A Streamline Moderne gem.

In 1990, Spy Magazine sent out checks with increasingly smaller amounts disguised as refunds to some of the richest people in New York as a social experiment, eventually sending one for 13 cents. Only two people cashed the 13 cent check: a Saudi arms dealer and Donald J. Trump.

Nun Day at Fenway Park was a cherished Boston tradition that dates back to the early 1960s. It originated as a special event organized by the Boston Red Sox, in collaboration with Boston Archbishop Cardinal Richard Cushing, to honor and host hundreds of nuns at a home game. The initiative began with an invitation from Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey to religious communities across greater Boston. Large groups of sisters, often dressed in traditional habits, attended games in significant numbers—such as the approximately 700 nuns who joined Cardinal Cushing for a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on July 5, 1961. The nuns occupied sections in the grandstand, typically on the third-base side, making for a memorable scene. The last major observance of ‘Nun Day’ appears to have occurred around 1972.

Inspired by the Code Pink Cuba trip, I'm reading up on the history of communist regimes inviting gullible western leftists in for luxury propaganda tours There's a book on this called "Political Pilgrims" but the Kindle version of it is $53. That seems... odd.

@billybinion Perhaps they feel that they'd be screwing over other nearby farmers by taking it: changing the land, adding traffic, making it easier for ED to be used on them, and lowering the water table.

The buyer offered them *ten times* what the land is worth. Take the money.
