@MaryBowdenMD Wild how this tweet unintentionally suggests US grads just need to work harder because competition exposing gaps isn’t the same as ‘taking spots.’ Might also help to understand how the Match and its data should be analysed before drawing conclusions.

Over the past 10 years, the US has seen a steady rise in foreign medical students taking US student residency spots. Every year, 1000+ US medical students fail to match, while 6000+ FMGs do match. About half of unmatched students find a spot, but they must still compete with FMGs for the leftover positions, leaving 500 - 600 US medical students with a worthless medical degree.

No, they didn’t take “residency spots from US medical students”. There are ~41,000 offered spots in the US training match, and ~30,000 MD plus DO graduates each year. Congrats to King Edward Medical school in PK. I know several graduates, and they are very well trained.
