Women's ability to scream is actually extremely important. Once at 2am in istanbul I got stalked down deserted alleyways. I tried to run but he followed me; in a dead end i turned around, he was lunging at me, and something primal and ancient took over; i screamed with a scream I didn't know i was capable of. I was not conscious of it, it was like I was possessed, it was ear-splitting. The guy stuttered to a halt, and everybody in the near vicinity buildings woke up. He bolted away, and all the neighbors came out to try to help. It was really cool to find out my body came installed with alarm hardware that I'd never before had cause to get activated. It was effective! It possibly saved my life!

@mitotic But the thing is, it pissed c i s lesbians off for some pretty obvious reasons. Lesbians, who are natural allies of trans people, sometimes get radicalized by this far more than anything in the normal suite of trans issues.

Long before the political debates about trans issues, the thing that radicalized TERFs back in the 1970's was a fairly small but highly publicized number of trans women were clearly just behaving like straight men with male privilege and demanding lesbians have sex with them.

What happened is that there were a few obnoxious people who didn't get bottom surgery and declared that lesbians needed to sleep with them to show solidarity. We have letters to the editor of feminist zines and such confirming this

@Ak6338952927051 @dilanesper there are ways for institutions to guard against child molestation structurally as well, basic stuff like "no adult ever allowed to be alone with a child in a room" or more complex filtering mechanisms for hiring. no parents go thru any of these.

@dilanesper what are you so scared is going to happen? a kid gets told he can't have heroin by his mom and storms off to a child shelter and stays there until he's 18? if this happened it would still lead to larger numbers of abused kids being freed in ways they have literally 0 hope of now.

@mitotic And yes, 14 year olds are terrible, impulsive, ignorant decisionmakers (and drama queens and sometimes even liars) so you absolutely need an authority figure who is an adult and experienced and can evaluate these claims rather than just deferring to the kid.

@dilanesper kids are not excited to become sex workers. they do it because going back home is genuinely worse. if doing child sex work is better than going home, why don't we just legalize running away instead of forcing kids to prove they should be allowed to leave?

@dilanesper this is in part due to the fact that running away is illegal and thus forces you out of most of the economy and society if you don't want to have the cops drag you back to your parents. children of abusive parents should be provided for by the state to the *child's* satisfaction.
