H-1B on the bench. Job searching for more than 2 months. H-1Bs only have a 60 day grace period when terminated or laid-off, but the individual is still in the United States.

@Whatszzat @BrahmaVishnuMah @san_x_m Yeah whatever, I just came across a story from India where lady killed her husband because he was too dark. I know for sure in India if you’re dark skinned you’re automatically considered ugly. That’s why most North Indians think South Indians are inferior.

His name was Srinivas Kuchibhotla. Born in Hyderabad. His parents called him Srinu. He came to America in 2006 for his master's. Graduated with a 3.85 GPA. Worked his way up from software engineer to aviation programs manager at Garmin in Kansas. His manager said one thing about him. Top of his class kind of guy. He built a home in Kansas with his wife. Painted the walls himself. Installed the garage door himself. A few weeks before he died, they had a doctor's appointment. They were trying to start a family. He would have turned 33 on March 9. On February 22 2017, he and his friend Alok stopped at a bar after work to watch a basketball game. An ordinary Wednesday evening. A man there had been watching them for weeks. Told others they looked like terrorists. That night, he walked up to their table. Poked Srinivas in the chest. Demanded to know their immigration status. Shouted get out of my country. Other patrons threw him out. He drove home. Got his gun. Changed his shirt so nobody would recognise him. Came back. He fired eight rounds. Srinivas died that night. As the killer fled, he told someone he had just killed two Iranians. Srinivas was Indian. From Hyderabad. Eleven years in America. Not one complaint against him. Not one rule broken. His mother had asked him many times to come back if he ever felt unsafe. He always told her he was safe. His body came home to Hyderabad in a coffin. His mother wailed as it was carried through the streets in a flower laden carriage. She said she would not allow her younger son to go back to America. His father said whatever was destined has happened. The killer got three life sentences. Srinivas got a funeral at 32. He did everything right. Degree. Visa. Job. Taxes. Never raised his voice at anyone. None of it was enough. His name was Srinivas Kuchibhotla. Every Indian in the US deserves to know it.

Her name is Sunayana Dumala. In February 2017 her husband Srinivas was shot dead at a bar in Kansas. A man who thought he looked like a terrorist. She was planning her first child with him when he died. When he died her visa died with her. Her status in America was tied to his H1B. She faced deportation. She posted one question online from India. Do we belong here. Then she made a decision that surprised everyone. She went back to America to fulfil his dream. A congressman intervened to let her stay. She fought for her own visa for 10 months. She went to Congress and testified about broken immigration laws. She was invited to Trump’s State of the Union as a guest of a Republican senator. She founded a nonprofit called Forever Welcome for immigrant rights. She is now on the path to US citizenship. In court she read her statement to the man who killed Srinivas. Srinu and I came to America full of dreams. Now my American Dream is broken. Not every brown skinned person is suspicious or evil. But kind, smart and contributing to America. She is still in Kansas. In the city they built together. The ground beneath her feet was taken away. She built new ground. Her name is Sunayana Dumala. India should know it. Follow for real stories about people who turned pain into purpose.

@san_x_m I’m not trying to generalize, but I’m sorry if you think otherwise. Telugu people consider going to the USA and settling there as the ultimate success in life. No other part of India seems to be as obsessed with the US as Telugu people.

If you are an Indian engineer on H1B in the US right now read this carefully. Your employer cannot just fire you and walk away. Three things most H1B workers never know. One. If they terminate you they must pay for your return flight to India. It is called the return transportation obligation. It is the law. Two. If they laid you off within the first year they may owe you back wages. You can claim them. Three. You have 60 days after termination to find a new sponsor. During those 60 days you have full legal rights. Use them. How to fight back. File a complaint directly with the US Department of Labor. No lawyer needed. No court appearance. No fees. The biggest myth in H1B community. Filing a wage complaint will affect your visa. It will not. That is the law. Indian engineers are the largest H1B workforce in America. They are also the least likely to complain because fear of visa consequences. Know your rights before someone takes them from you. 🇺🇸🇮🇳

The OPT visa was created by President George HW Bush in 1992 as a 12 month program. It allowed international students to work in their field of whatever their major is. Obama changed it to a 3 year visa. OPT visa workers don't have to pay FICA taxes, so employers save 7.65% The scam is for people from India (and other countries) to come to the USA on a student visa, start working on an OPT visa, then hunt for an H1B sponsor and convert to a long term H1B visa. There is no cap on the number of OPT visas. President Trump could end the OPT visa loophole at any time. President Bush started it, without authorization from Congress. President Trump can end it.
Senator Eric Schmitt@SenEricSchmitt

Update in my fight to dismantle the broken OPT system—ICE just got me the numbers: In Missouri alone there are 4,430 OPT visas—many working in jobs that are out-of-scope, stealing opportunities from young Missourians. Here are some of the worst examples.🧵

@WallStreetMav Our out of touch judiciary will stuck down executive order in minutes. Big tech is a primary beneficiary of OPT program. They’re getting cheap labor for 3 years, they also happened to be big donors to both parties why’s they stuck it down We as Americans are doomed. I’ve given up

80% of H-1B visas go to entry level or junior level positions. They are not even remotely “high skilled”. They are merely cheaper. H-1B is a scam and needs to be scrapped entirely.
CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil@CBSEveningNews

For decades, the U.S. has imported highly-skilled tech workers from around the world on H-1B visas. But the Trump administration changed the way they are granted. CBS News’ Shanelle Kaul reports on how that is impacting the pipeline of global talent coming to America.
