Germany: Step 1: Let in millions of migrants to fill the jobs to have enough workers to pay for retirement programs. Step 2: Migrants go on welfare programs and don't work. Step 3: Raise the retirement age on productive German workers to pay for welfare benefits of migrants.

But one needn't assume that the physical world exhausts reality - especially given the primary, undeniable datum of our own consciousness, which has no ordinary physical properties (size, mass, location, charge, etc.) at all. Change your postulates, and a different geometry becomes possible.

i don’t see how not to be a physicalist. don’t want to be one but seems unavoidable. if you assume the universe is built from blind, non-conscious physics with no intrinsic mind baked in at the bottom, consciousness emerging only at the level of brains and computation feels just as forced—and sidesteps the combination problem entirely.

@tszzl This "combination problem" has never been persuasively answered. How can a congeries of discrete individuals form a unitary consciousness?

@tszzl If panpsychism is true, why isn’t our experience a disjointed “mind dust” of billions of separate particle-experiences? How do tiny, simple “subjects” or qualities merge into one complex, singular subject (you) with a single viewpoint?

@duncanreyburn (Full disclosure: I'm a substance dualist, and I think it very unlikely indeed that consciousness arises as a result of mere mechanical calculation.)

@duncanreyburn Given that consciousness - the existence of a locus of experience - is the foundation of all claim to moral inclusion, where should the burden of proof lie?

Biden was clearly suffering from greater cognitive decline than Trump currently is. Trump's decline has more to do with deterioration in impulse control (which was never a strong suit of his to begin with) than in intellectual ability (also never a particularly strong suit of his). This makes him a less pathetic figure than Biden, but arguably a more dangerous one. Bottom line: People this old have no business being president of the world's most powerful country.

Trump is going mentally downhill just like Biden did at the same age. It manifests differently, but we can all see it.

@AuronMacintyre Here's one for object-oriented-language programmers: Modern leftist ideology is the idea that you can govern all of humanity using nothing but base-class pointers.

Modern ideology has the same spiritual root as Frankenstein You can break civilization down to its constituent parts and reassemble them into a facsimile of human society but what you end up creating is a bizarre monster which will inevitably turn on its creator

I had some friends who went to Hampshire College, back in the early 70s. I visited once. The place was a temple of hedonism, and its raison d'être was only to be a thumb in the eye to all of the West's academic and cultural traditions. It was an early garrison of the "long march" that followed the terrible shipwreck of the 1960s. Good riddance.

Even decades of Franco were ultimately insufficient to defeat the communists The right has to win every time, the left only needs a relatively small period in power to destroy society The lesson is to never let communists have power in any way no matter what

NEW - Spain's PM Sanchez says the legalization of over 500,000 migrants will be approved today, calling it "an act of justice," comparing today's migrants to "our grandparents who emigrated to U.S. and Europe, in search for a better life," and "a necessity, Spain, like other European countries is ageing. Without new people working and contributing to the system, our prosperity slows."
