@PeterSjostedtH @theodorus5 @AhQFish No one knows enough about the brain to dismiss any signal as epiphenominal. When someone says "epiphenominal", I hear "doesn't fit my theory". If a theory can't explain data, the theory is the problem, not the data.

New research using AI and MRI on the lower leg points to a simple takeaway: bigger calf muscles can push down harder at the ankle—think a stronger push when pointing your toes or pushing off when you walk. Extra fat inside the muscle doesn’t.

🧠 Why have EEG/MEG alpha phase studies been so inconsistent about effects on #perception? NEW PREPRINT: Individual differences are key. Our new Neurobehavioral Link Function proves alpha phase CAUSALLY shapes #multisensory integration. 📄 biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #Neuroscience

Thread on a new paper by Ned Block (@De_dicto): "Can only meat machines be conscious?" Main point: many discussions assume that only the computational & functional features of a system are relevant to whether it's conscious. But the underlying biology might also matter. 🧵1/

𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? In a sense yes, but does network science help us understand the brain as a complex system? Intriguing paper. If anything the paper has 800+ refs! doi.org/10.1016/j.plre…

@nico_hinrichs @PessoaBrain Will read. But the real question is: do our imaging tools and analyses actually capture brain complexity and dynamics? Let’s first grasp what amplitude, temporal dynamics, and connectivity mean perceptually. Then decide if it’s really a “complex network".

Excited to share the first in our series of papers using hypothesis-driven analyses to identify reproducible, verifiable biomarkers of chronic pain. We compared ML vs. statistical accuracy and validated findings across three cohorts (N=197, one offsite).

@netphys1 et al. find that chronic low back pain is associated with hyperconnectivity between the nucleus accumbens and prefrontal cortex regions, a pattern that predicts pain intensity and was partly reproduced between different study cohorts #PAIN bit.ly/4neD5zr
