I’m obviously dumb, but $pali data looks good to me. Not sure what people were expecting from an small p1 study

@CityOnFireNews @DanielGorman20 From what I gather he just doesn’t care much for Hollywood and seems to be mainly working in commercials and advertising work that goes mainly uncredited on his IMDB

@DanielGorman20 It's interesting how some folks can have a bomb and recover and then some just get *punished* and you never see another movie from then again, like Pfister.

I don’t think Batman Begins is very good (arguably the worst thing Nolan has made) but it has some very nice landscapes courtesy of Wally Pfister and that’s not nothing

Last Four Friday - Another beautifully hypnotic Jesús Franco film, a tight Canadian backwoods thriller, another solid Antonio Sabato Sr thriller where he busts some heads to get his way, and a modern Russian drama that has three characters and still manages to be mesmerizing

RIP; nothing quite like his run of American-nightmare 80s movies. A fascinating reflection of certain strains of post-Cold War conservative neurosis and the key action star of the Reagan era.

So many films of the 1970s are gorgeous with their landscapes. But what always stood out to me about those films was that there was a naturalism that so many big “acclaimed” directors dont seem to get. I like Oppenheimer to a certain extent, but the film is barely staged

What annoys me about this the most is that the complete lack of proper staging of scenes. There’s no flow or rhythm and it makes so many acclaimed films so lackluster. It’s not helping that so many mainstream critics are visually illiterate

The aesthetic appropriation of arthouse techniques by filmmakers who have no interesting ideas is one of my least favourite things about the age of Netflix movies. The cinema equivalent of adolescent writers peppering their prose with polysyllabic adjectives to sound smart.

Last Four Friday - A solid film that flopped and is out of theaters pretty much, a French crime film that is wonderfully quiet and slow, a German thriller that is also wonderfully quiet and slow, and a Spanish thriller that again is wonderfully quiet and slow.

@PetreRaleigh Yeah exactly. The first one was an experiment “What if Friday the 13th was shot like Gerry?”. So it undermines the first one by just making another slasher film. It’s not even directed by the guy who had the entire idea in the first place!

@njdevils901 Totally could be although the presence of any scenes at all from some of the POVs represented in this trailer constitutes a failure in my book. Get that stuff inside the cabin or whatever outta here

@PetreRaleigh Yeah it’s messy. I think they got themselves a horror hit and decided to just slap on the same aspect ratio and ramp up the pacing for the sequel? The trailer for the first one also made it look more exciting than it was, so could just be marketing

@njdevils901 I was mixed on it but it's only to the extent that it actually committed to the style that I thought it worked. There was a masterpiece buried there which on this evidence there's no strong impulse to unearth

Last Four Friday: A wonderful Italian thriller entirely on a boat, John Hyams with a very simple and well-executed thriller, and two very bizarre early 70s films that I was utterly mesmerized by, one a hijack thriller the other one an almost-experimental psychological drama

Journey (1972, Paul Almond) - The last of Almond’s trilogy with Bujold. One of the strangest films I’ve ever seen, but something that needs to be witnessed. Bujold and John Vernon are absolutely wonderful, the film is impeccably shot, it really is a brilliant mind fuck.
