@montreallanders this is sad, like itโs not even a hard surname to say and he is very popular playerโฆ I get some Russians getting nicknames like Geno cause they canโt pronounce Jenya but this is ridiculous, there is that Z right there!
English

@noirsofia american announcers are the worst at pronouncing playersโ names and they donโt even bother to try, they just laugh when they get called out and go back to butchering names
English

So yall didnโt bully me for this I have a new questionโฆ I got into nhl recently and WHY americans are not pronouncing z in Kaprizov surnameโฆ..

I read some hr fan fiction and itโs never stop being funny how fic writers choose for โoh I donโt know this very hard word in English? What does it mean?โ thing and for some reason ITS ALWAYS THE WORD THAT SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME IN RUSSIAN

@teukquila Honestly I thought maybe they are trying to say Z but it just sounds too close to Z . But they do pronounce it in another surnames clearly. Yeah I watch mostly USA broadcasts. So fascinating to me. Honestly my surname people canโt pronounce correctly for so many years I get it.
English

@noirsofia The Z sound in general is so uncommon in English it's often illited to a s or ts sound especially in the Canadian accent (of ur watching NHL commentary more likely than not the commentators are Canadian, my z sound like in daze, cozy, fuze, are all way closer to s or ts than ะท)
English

@nigrum_stellas kirill seems like a harder work to pronounce for English speakers but Kaprizov seem like them just being lazy. Honestly I guess itโs better than how they pronounce his teammate Tarasenko
English

@noirsofia i think its because the โprizโ sound in his name doesnt exist/isnt common in english but its so annoying how even the broadcasters for nhl say it wrong a lot and almost no one pronounces โkirillโ right either ๐ญ

@mothseasons yeah I think I read this one too. I understand that the author doesnโt think about checking these things but for some reason I never read those line used with actually hard wordsโฆ like what oods are that itโs always same sounding words
English

@noirsofia it would make sense for shane maybe if it sounds the same but it reads differently but i read one where ilya didnt know the word for sentimental and said it in russian. it's the same word!!!
(tbf in-fic shane translated it as 'sappy' but it threw me OFF)

English

@papuvesi no this was even funnier cause pedestal was use in the idiom โputting on pedestalโ so ilya was asking what is โpedestalโ and in russian we have the same idiom! with the same meaning!! and itโs also the same in a sport context. no hate to the author but it was so funny to me
English

@noirsofia I think a lot of people just don't think of the fact that ESL folks will usually know most of the english words related to their main interest or job, even if those words seem complicated. you can even have a harder time w a simpler word simply cause you don't need to use it
English

@teukquila haha itโs always โhardโ words and most of them are just french or latin ๐ญ
English

@noirsofia I have this same problem with my bf where if he's speaking English and forgets a very soecific word or term he'll go straight to google translate and I'm like just say it in russian first before doing that cuz it's often the same ๐ญ
English
