@MrBruffEnglish Also remember far enough back for the anthology short stories; The Gold Cadillac etc. I used to love teaching those.

@MrBruffEnglish I remember having a massive amount of choice about which poems to teach. Six core ones they had to know and free reign to teach as many of the others as you could. The compulsory 15 has killed so many students' love for poetry.

Who has been teaching long enough to remember when the GCSE English question could be EITHER 'fact and opinion' or 'presentational features'? Also, the poetry from other cultures anthology with 'Limbo', 'Nothing's Changed' and more! Feels like a lifetime ago.

@dnleslie Not only could I, but I'd much rather do it that way! Besides, the point isn't what's on the board and what you're doing, but what the students are doing. And they get more done if they don't have to sit reading PowerPoint slides that rival Dickens in length.

Teachers: Could you teach a lesson armed with only a single whiteboard pen and an empty whiteboard? No desktop, no technology. The pupils will have a jotter and a pencil. The lesson will last for 60 minutes. Please comment on why you gave your answer

@tennisontelly YouTube is the place to watch. @Channel4 cut to swimming with Alfie at 15 all serving for the match. With about four seconds to scan a QR code to see the rest, which meant no one watching on TV actually saw it. I'm so cross!

@mrs_denglish A lot of schools now opting for GCSE selection at the end of year 8 as well, which means narrowing the curriculum before they've barely even got started.

We had free choice not option blocks as well (timetabler nightmare but kept most of us happy!). This stuff matters. For lots of reasons. It matters to individuals, school and society. They aren't 'easy' subjects. They aren't 'less' than the sciences/humanities. They matter. 2/2

This is what the EBacc achieved. A hollowing out of those subjects not included. When I did my options back in the mid-90s only 2 students didn't do one of Drama, Art or Music in my highly selective grammar school. It was seen as hugely important to include at least one. 1/2
Campaign for the Arts@_CFTA

🚨 NEW: the decline in arts education at GCSE has reached a new low. Our analysis of today's results finds that arts subjects now account for a smaller proportion of GCSE entries than at any time since 2010. Over that period, there's been a 47% drop. #gcseresultsday2024 🧵

@LottoGoodCauses @Aquatics_GB @adam_peaty You've come a long way since 1969... My mum gave me the programme containing this article from Martyn Woodroffe today, because that's my late dad as a junior on the front cover (visible between the Queen and the ASA President) at the Crystal Palace centenary gala that May.

@JordanHolt23 Makes it incredible to think Andy Murray won that twice. TWICE. It felt incredible at the time, but even more so now.

Insane to be live at such a historical moment for tennis. The level of tennis Djokovic produced today almost makes me forget the career slam in PR disasters he’s got. Congrats to the GOAT.

@mrs_denglish Great role model. The "if you dream big enough and work hard enough you'll make it" narrative is kind of dangerous. This sensible perspective from someone who clearly tried her heart out is refreshing and important, especially for young people.

I will always really like that Andy Murray got us all saying "this might be Andy Murray's final career game" about 5 different times in his very final tournament. So very very very Andy Murray of him.

Just heard @bigdaddybunce on Radio 5 #bbcolympics and was really moved by his compassionate, nuanced and sensitive defence of the two boxers being targeted by so much controversy and disgusting speculation. Great passion and great punditry.

@henrybreadstick Just as long as Zverev doesn't do an Andy Murray and defend his title, I'll be happy.
