In development, the database is fast, flexible, and forgiving. Tables are small, queries are quick, and you can change the schema whenever you want with no consequences. After launch, that changes. Slow queries that were invisible at 500 rows become painful at 50,000. A missing index means a full table scan on every page load. A nullable field that seemed harmless starts causing null pointer exceptions in production code. A schema change that takes a second locally locks a table for minutes on a live database with active users. And migrations become scary. Running one wrong migration in production can corrupt data or take down the app with no easy path back. The habits that prevent this: add indexes early and deliberately, treat nullable fields as a deliberate choice not a default, write migrations that can be rolled back, test schema changes against a copy of real data before touching production. The database is not the boring part. It's the part where slow negligence becomes sudden crisis.
