I am deeply worried and concerned that several areas in both North Bengal and South Bengal have been flooded due to sudden huge rains within a few hours last night as well as due to rush of excessive river waters in our State from outside. Yesterday night there was sudden rainfall exceeding 300 mm in 12 hours in North Bengal, and there was simultaneously excessive flow of water into Sankosh river and generally flow of river waters from Bhutan and Sikkim. This caused disasters. We have been shocked and saddened to know that we have lost some brothers and sisters in the situation evolved by huge rainfall and river floods. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and shall send all assistance to the families immediately. Two iron bridges have collapsed, several roads have been damaged and flooded, huge tracts of land in the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar have been inundated. There have been reports of worrying damages and losses particularly in Mirik, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Matigara and Alipurduar. I have been monitoring the situation from last night on round- the- clock basis. I have held virtual meeting with Chief Secretary, DG of Police, the North Bengal DMs and SPs, and the meeting has been attended also by public representatives like Gautam Deb and Anit Thapa. I am in constant touch and am personally going to North Bengal with my Chief Secretary tomorrow in this connection. Meanwhile, we are advising the tourists in North Bengal to stay put where they are till our police evacuates them safely. Rescue costs are ours and tourists need not be anxious. Some places ( like Mirik, due to natural position) have been affected severely, while many other places are also under our intensive monitoring. I am personally keeping information, giving instructions and surveying the situations continually. Our officers and police will reach out all assistance to all affected persons everywhere. State HQ and the districts are having 24×7 control rooms. Bijoya Dashami marks the close of Durga Puja — a time for joy, cheer and renewed hope. Yet instead of allowing the people of West Bengal to conclude the festival in peace, the DVC released 65,000 cusecs of water without any prior notice to the State. This reckless act is nothing short of an attempt to inflict misery during our sacred festivities. Such unilateral action is shameful and absolutely unacceptable. By releasing water without intimation, the DVC has placed millions of lives in Bengal in immediate peril. This is not a natural calamity, it is a disaster manufactured by the DVC. Let me be clear: I will not allow anyone to carry out a Bisarjan of Bengal. Every conspiracy against our people will be resisted with full force. Truth will prevail over deceit and good will triumph over evil. Joy Maa Durga!

Today at Kalighat, we observed Bijoya Sammilani with the wholehearted participation of party leaders, workers, members of the state administration, the media fraternity, celebrated filmstars, singers, and puja organisers. Though Durga Puja has drawn to a close, its radiant message of the strength of unity, the joy of togetherness, and the enduring bond among people continues to resonate. In the warm and intimate atmosphere of today’s gathering, our interactions further reinforced this spirit of solidarity and shared purpose. বাংলা গানের কিংবদন্তি, গীতশ্রী সন্ধ্যা মুখোপাধ্যায়ের জন্মদিবসে জানাই বিনম্র শ্রদ্ধাঞ্জলি। তাঁর গাওয়া প্রতিটি গান আজও বাঙালি হৃদয়ে সমানভাবে স্পন্দিত হয়। আমার সৌভাগ্য, আমি তাঁর স্নেহধন্য ছিলাম। ২০১১ সালে আমাদের সরকার ক্ষমতায় আসার পরই আমরা তাঁকে রাজ্যের সর্বোচ্চ সম্মান 'বঙ্গ বিভূষণ' - এ সম্মানিত করতে পেরেছিলাম। আমরা ধন্য।

Utterly unacceptable

The latest update on the unilateral and wilful release of water by DVC is that they have by the evening today released more than 150,000 cusecs of water from Maithon and Panchet dams etc to flood our West Bengal during festival times. This is a deliberate ploy to unleash disaster on us in order to inflict pains on millions when they are still busy in the Pujas. Shameful, intolerable, unacceptable! We protest!!

With this in mind, I visited several remarkable Durga Puja pandals today, each reflecting the creative richness of Bengal. At Chaltabagan, the theme ‘Ami Banglay Gaan Gai’ beautifully celebrated our shared Bengali roots and cultural pride. Jodhpur Park 95 Pally highlighted the luminaries of Bengal who have shaped our identity through art, literature, science, and social reform. At Tridhara, I was transported to the sublime world of ancient art, architecture, and sculpture, witnessing classical traditions brought to life. May the divine energy of Maa Durga guard our homes, enrich our lives, and nurture the hopes of Bengal.

Maha Navami celebrates the culmination of Shakti, the force that destroys evil and restores balance. It is a call to every son and daughter of Bengal to rise with courage, to defend what is just and to protect what is sacred. As Maa Durga empowers us with her strength, let us envision and work towards a Bengal of dignity, unity and abundance.

Bijoya Dashami is both an ending and a beginning. With tearful hearts we bid farewell to Maa Durga, yet her blessings endure. As Maa returns to her divine abode, her message stays with us: That truth prevails, justice triumphs and humanity unites. May Bengal march ahead, carrying her light within.

Saddened by the demise of senior politician Vijay Kumar Malhotra. He was an effective sports administrator too, and his contributions were significant. I knew him well and had occasions to work with him. My condolences to his family, friends and followers.
