Whilst there’s understandable disappointment felt by some re the Metcalfe deal, some points have to be considered:
- First seven figure fee received for #bcafc player since Wells in 2014
- L1 Young POTS for 25/26 and two years left on deal means for strong position at negotiation table, thus asking price
- The then 20-year-old was purchased for a much, much lower undisclosed fee
- Millwall finished in Championship play-offs, hard to fend off such pull
- City finished 24/25 promotion season with Smallwood and Pattison in midfield
- Bradford City only a season into being a L1 team again
Metcalfe was a brilliant player for Bradford City, and has rightly garnered such interest, but the club isn’t in a position to maintain such a promising asset as it continues to establish itself at L1 level. It’s potentially a harsh reality for some, and that’s understandable, but it feels a very organic part of the club’s continued progression on and off the field. It goes without saying, the next part is crucial in terms of recruitment and indeed replacement. However, if recent history is anything to go by, that’s an achievable objective. We’ll discuss this more on the podcast!
