“For our growth as a club, that was an unbelievable period where we were tested to the maximum.” Graham Alexander believes the hardship of last season’s dramatic run-in will aid Bradford City’s resolve as they approach the same task this season. #BCAFC | #BBCFootball | #BBCEFL

Absolutely right, head injuries are no joke. The cynic would suggest that - given where Bradford were in attack and Mansfield a defender (Sweeney) down - then it may have been done tactically. There is also, rightly, the opposing view the head injury was genuine and of course merited halting play. As is the modern game, where I think its fair to say both instances occur, I was trying to reflect that.

@JamieRaynor I dunno if it was you Jamie lad because there was two passionately bias fans on the commo, which is fine, but one of them suggested Sweeney may have feigned a head injury and the referee fell for it. In reality the referee let it go on for too long, head injuries are no joke.

In relation to the concussion substitution at #bcafc last night, in 2024 IFAB stated: “• Where a team makes a ‘concussion substitution’, the opposing team can use an ‘additional substitute’ and receives an ‘additional substitution’ opportunity. This additional opportunity can be used only for the ‘additional substitute’ and not for a ‘normal substitute’.” Effectively, Bradford City would have been entitled to make a sixth substitution as a result of Mansfield’s use of the concussion substitution, which is something I’ve learnt today. downloads.theifab.com/downloads/addi…

If you're referring to the moment where I presented the fact that referees rightly have to respond, and thus halt play (regardless of game situation) because of head injury concern, along with the much discussed counter argument that players are aware of such concern and know that it will stop play - then yes, that was me

@iamjasondexter So why not say, ‘yes it was a concussion substitution’ if it’s all after the event and confirmed?

@JamieRaynor That’s all after the event though isn’t it? There’s a protocol to follow. If you have a head knock, and then get headache, this could lead to concussion. After the game, medical staff check. Found no additional signs of concussion. We now don’t have a fresh player available

@iamjasondexter I understand completely the symptoms of concussion, Jason. The fact that at the start of the answer, it’s said ‘not concussion’ is the confusing point.

Respectfully, I disagree. Given you’ve replied to the comment, I’ll assume you’ve read the above point. Clough’s answer to the direct question about whether it was a concussion substitute creates confusion. As I’ve stated, GA confirmed it was concussion as per the necessary communication they’re meant to receive by the officials as a result of the sub being made. I’ve not once questioned the authenticity of the concussion, I’ve just presented the facts. That’s my impartial responsibility. It’s not up to me how people interpret those facts, yourself included. For the record, as I’ve previously stated, it will be interesting to see if the player in question overseas a period of absence due to the mandatory concussion protocol. I hope he recovers well.

@JamieRaynor @danielsw1997 Lad got a bang on the head, reported a symptom of concussion and subbed accordingly. Thing is Jamie, you nor the thousands of City fans are looking at it from a neutral standpoint.

You can use a concussion substitute for "clear or immediate symptoms of concussion", a whack to the head and then the headache is a symptom of, even if not directly a concussion. Whinge all the time do this lot when things aren't going their way
Jamie Raynor@JamieRaynor

“Not concussion. We just got a shout across that he wasn’t feeling too good. I think he got a bang on the head a few minutes before, then he felt okay, then he said he had a little bit of a headache. Soon as we get that, we don’t take any chances.” So a concussion substitution used, for non-concussion? #bcafc

I did find that rather curious. If it wasn’t a concussion substitution, as Clough states, then presumably that makes Mansfield’s 81st min substitution of Abbott for Russell in breach of the law, given it was after Oates for Bowery in the 78th. However, as per the rules, the use of a concussion substitute has to be communicated to the opposition bench and GA confirmed it was a concussion substitution

I could be wrong, but I think that only applies if your bench allocation is the same as the maximum substitutions allowed. So for example, if the league/competition only allows for five subs on the bench, and you’re allowed to make five substitutions, if you’ve made all five but then need to make an additional concussion substitution, you’re allowed to bring back on a player that you’ve previously substituted off so the concussed player can come off.

@JamieRaynor Interesting post Jamie. The concussion substitution is probably widely known, but not that the opposition was allowed to use an extra sub too. The other point if I am reading it right is that a player who has already been substituted can go back on as the concussion sub! 🤷‍♂️
