@MattBraynard Sure, but that's always how it works. Eventually misuse becomes the new standard. The problem with decimate is that it's old meaning was so precise. Once you hear it's precise original meaning, it's hard to accept the modern meaning.

Pet peeve: to "decimate" means to reduce by 10%, so stop using it like it's a synonym for "destroy." Just say "destroy." You don't sound smarter, you sound stupid.

So you're saying that dictionaries don't pretend to have the correct usage of words. Meaning that they are not capable of proving that I am correct when asserting the correct use of the word decimate - since they don't pretend to show what is correct, only what is common. Do you know what's common in Afghanistan but is not correct?

I have a whole bunch of midwits in my comments pointing out modern dictionary definitions, not recognizing that modern dictionaries bow to the masses, IE if enough people start misusing a word, the postmodernist liberals will change the definition. So take a look at the definition for "woman" in the Cambridge dictionary and then tell me that's what should be an authority for the meaning of words.
