@LayneTPittman This was our Baylor fall 1988 thru spring 1990 bear mascot. His name was Judge Zachariah BoBo and we called him Zach. Alan Brown was the Bear Trainer for Zach. I was one of Alan’s 3 roommates. All of us were Chambermen, a BU service org. who cared for the Bears & still do.

Today, I celebrate my 10th anniversary of my "Alive Day". On April 26th, 2014, I was involved in a tragic accident that caused a head injury to my skull, brain and cracked one vertebrae in my upper spine. Some great people that was close to me remember this and I got tremendous support from my wife, Jennifer, family and friends then and now. I have heard from many of them today. I want to say thank you so much for your gracious, kind and generous words. I am incredibly fortunate and I will never forget my learnings from this critical event in my life. I learned that your recovery from a medical setback or any type of adversity has to be something that you own and take full ownership and accountability of. I learned that you won’t do it without help from friends, colleagues, family, doctors and medical staff among many others and you have to embrace that and be gracious and thankful to them without forgetting that in the end, it is up to you. Especially my amazing wife, Jennifer who selflessly supported me and dedicated herself towards my recovery. I learned that the term “Alive Day” is very fitting to the ethos that is so important and should be celebrated because it is the day that you were blessed with another chance or a second act and of course what matters is “what are you going to do with it”. This term became mainstream when James Gandolfini (AKA Tony Sopranos) hosted a special on HBO before he passed away titled “Alive Day Memories” which focused on veterans returning home from Iraq. He demonstrated in that series how some of us celebrate two days in our lives, our Birthday and our “Alive Day” which is the day we narrowly escaped death. As a result, I made some commitments at that time to get much stronger in my faith and remember the grace that has been granted to me by my heavenly Father and who I need to live for, to do more to give back to others and pay it forward and to live life in such a way that I can look back on my alive day and be ecstatic that this happened to me. Although I am admittedly a flawed individual with a number of things that I need to focus on improving, I am really proud to say that I have lived up to those commitments that I made to myself back in 2014. Additionally, I have been able to witness my 4 grandchildren come into this world and have been afforded the opportunity to engage with them and hear them scream “Poppie” when they see me which has been such a precious gift to me. Thank you again for your messages of well wishes and reminding me of one of the most important, impactful and transformational moments of my life that continues to bring me humility, faith, joy and a reminder that I’m incredibly blessed. It is a day that I celebrate and am honored to remember.

@BUDREW Thank you @BUDREW & your family for seeing, believing, & showing that Baylor is a destination school, not a stepping stone school. You have brought JOY to Baylor nation today. Your outspoken faith, your family-first priorities, & the humility by which you lead is second to none.

If you'd like to contribute some money to the survivors of the shootings in Allen, Texas you can do so here: gofundme.com/c/act/allen-te… All three of these gofundme campaigns have been verified as authentic by gofundme. I keep thinking about William Cho having to go on now without his parents and his brother. Scarred for life for no reason. It could have been any of us. I just donated; it's the very least I can do. If you'd retweet this I'm sure the recipients of the funds would be most appreciative.

@T_REX1991 Just did 10 days ago with my son @Trav_smith14. 3k elevation gain over 4 miles. Pretty tough. Round trip says 8.4 miles but feels further. Tough, loose rocks a lot of the way. Lots of switchbacks. Great hike. Enjoy.
