Bluebottles (Physalia) are known for drifting across the ocean with their large float as a sail. On our blue-water scuba dives in Hawaii, we found tiny 4mm babies down at 20 feet, not yet ready to breach the surface. Cc @jellywatch

So much well-deserved interest in apolemiid siphonophores these days! Siphonophores feature functionally specialized bodies arranged along the stem of the animal, close-up of Apolemia lanosa. #apolemia

Most famous is probably the "Galaxy siph" but I'm pretty partial to Apolemia lanosa, which we described with @stsiebert . Check out this beautiful *giant* siphonophore Apolemia recorded on #NingalooCanyons expedition. It seems likely that this specimen is the largest ever recorded, and in strange UFO-like feeding posture. Thanks @Caseywdunn for info @wamuseum @GeoscienceAus @CurtinUni @Scripps_Ocean
