In discussions of European colonialism and empire, actual examination of historical records and comparative analysis between the legacies of, say, the British and French, or Ottoman and Spanish Empires are far too rare. But there's a very common, easy pattern for those with a bit of historical knowledge: Those countries formerly run by the British today perform far better on average than those ran by any other empire. This empirical fact, demonstrable from Botswana to Singapore to Kenya to Hong Kong, is something the left have tremendous trouble grappling with. As a rule of thumb, if you were not a powerful independent nation state in the 17th-19th centuries, you were part of a larger empire. And if you were part of a larger empire, you would have prayed and thanked your lucky stars if that empire had been British rather than Spanish, Ottoman, French, or Portuguese.
