Overnight, I joined a virtual Leaders' Summit on the Strait of Hormuz co-hosted by President Macron and Prime Minister Starmer. Australia has consistently called for an end to this conflict. The longer the war goes on, the more significant the impact on the global economy will be, and the greater the human cost. Australians are feeling the impact on fuel supply and prices and we are working to shield families from the worst of it. Australia stands ready to support efforts to restore stability and security in the Strait of Hormuz and I welcome the announcement overnight of the Strait’s reopening. We want to see this hold.

Together with our partners, Australia will continue doing what we can to contribute to a just and enduring two-state solution.

Every time they put on their uniform, police officers put themselves on the line, for us. They face danger to keep our families and communities safe. Today and last Friday, we gathered to honour the courage of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart. The tributes paid to both these extraordinary men are a solemn reminder to all of us that when someone starts being a police officer, they don’t stop being a son or a brother, a daughter or a sister, a best mate or a beloved partner. Today we grieve for two lives that should have been filled with future happiness. We mourn the joyous memories that should have been made and treasured with others. We stand with the entire police family, who have lost two of their own in the line of duty. Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson was a hero. Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart was a hero. They will be honoured – and remembered – as heroes. By their colleagues, their loved ones – and all Australians. With honour they served. May they rest in peace.

Father Chris Riley had a heart as big as the country he served. He gave hope to young people doing it tough and never gave up on anyone. He was a good friend and his legacy will live on in the lives he changed.
