Derryn Hinch lived a life rich in colour and free from fear. As an interviewer, investigator and presenter he was much more than 'the Human Headline' he had a sense of the deeper story and the courage to cover it, come what may. He held to those same instincts as a Senator and he fought illness with that same bravery. My sincere condolences to his family and his many friends.

If there’s one thing every Pacific nation has in common, it’s a love of sport. Our new Pacific Rugby League Partnership will create new opportunities for the next generation of players from our region. But it’s about more than rugby league. Together, we’re opening doors to better education, skills and training for Pacific Islanders. Australia, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji and Samoa - all tackling our future together as one team.

Today, Australia and Papua New Guinea began a new chapter, becoming allies under the Pukpuk Treaty. Built on respect and our shared history, this Treaty reflects our commitment to the security of our region. Our two countries will keep walking together, side by side. 🇦🇺🇵🇬

Australia and Samoa are working together for a peaceful, secure and prosperous Pacific. 🇦🇺🇼🇸 Today, we talked about the challenges facing our region, from climate change to transnational crime and economic resilience. And tonight, we’ll share one of the great bonds of our Pacific family: rugby league.

Australia and Tonga share a close and enduring friendship. Today, we continued our work to strengthen education, health, regional security and our response to climate change. And we discussed taking our partnership to a new level. And with rugby league bringing our communities even closer, we’re investing in the Pacific Rugby League Partnership.

Building a stronger Pacific starts with making sure children get the best start in life. That’s why Australia built the brand new Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre in Honiara. It’s a place where mums can safely have their babies, and families can get the care they need closer to home. We’re also helping with new books for every child in primary school. Investing in a brighter, healthier future for the Pacific.

Happy Independence Day, Solomon Islands. Democracy and sovereignty in the Pacific matters for Australia. As the first country to recognise the Solomon Islands, Australia has been there since day one. Congratulations on 48 years and many more to come.

Australia and Solomon Islands are stepping up our partnership. Prime Minister Wale and I have agreed to negotiate a new comprehensive treaty. And we're backing it up with real support now, helping rebuild after Cyclone Maila and giving more young people the chance to study. Because Australia’s security starts in the Pacific, and we’ll always show up for our neighbours.

Education changes lives. And Australia is changing lives here in Fiji. Today we launched a new program, training local students in skills that will boost the economy. We’re creating more opportunities for the Pacific, because when our region succeeds Australia does too.

Two proud Pacific nations. Two historic treaties to make our region more secure. Today, Australia and Fiji signed the Ocean of Peace Alliance, with an obligation to come to each other’s defence in times of need. And with our Vuvale Union, we’ve committed to working more closely to boost our economies and invest in our people. From tackling climate change to building the infrastructure that connects our region, we’ll get it done together.
