@georgehanu @straceX not slower. The Amstrad CPC 6128 had 128kb of addressable ram(split into 4 banks of lower and 4 banks of upper memory that you could swap. you could also swap in 16kb firmware blocks(above the 128k) and modify them. I managed to write up to 160kb before crashing. :)

@straceX It is not magic so much as bit-level cheating. Reinterpret the float as an integer, do a wild approximation using the exponent structure, then refine once and ship 🚀 What is your favorite hack that only made sense because hardware was slower?

In 1999, calculating 3D lighting required doing 1 / sqrt(x) millions of times a second. CPUs back then would completely choke on this math. so the developers of Quake III used this literal black magic code instead. How the hell does 0x5f3759df calculate a square root?👇

@ThatMarocs @MrModez I run a potato laptop and a potato desktop. In the past i've used software and played games that have gotten pretty upgrades that have made them unusable on my setup so that's my primary concern. If it's not bloat then awesome. :)

It's important to have perspective. I'm tired after a long week but I rebuilt a staff portal, updated a task management tool, built an electorn app to manage a couple of S3 buckets and created a game for my son to practice his times tables on his amazon fire. That's a lot!

Neurodivergent friends, does water have a taste? To me, even bottled waters all taste different.

As a developer, have you ever wondered: You type a 16‑digit card number and the form instantly says “Invalid card number”. There are billions of possible numbers. How the hell is that check that fast?

British blokes…. I’ve purchased several “tins” of Heinz (British) beans because the idea of beans on toast intrigues me. I eagerly anticipate a tasting. Other than toasting bread and heating beans… Are there any other steps/ingredients?
