The Bristol Proteus Gas turbine warming up on a Norrköping-class missile boat (Swedish Navy). The boats were propelled by 3 shaft gas turbines 12,750 hp (9,510 kW), with 3 controllable pitch propellers. Max speed 41kts. (SOUND ON!!)

@philipmurraylaw I had a similar experience-contact the relevant Patient Liaison Service; they are extremely effective at resolving issues like this.

I had a cancer check in August. I never received any results. My GP said they didn't have results and I should call the test centre. The test centre doesn't give out results, and told me to phone outpatients. I phoned outpatients, and they passed me to the relative clinic, but none of the phone menu choices are about results. When I chose the most relevant option, I was forwarded to a secretary who's out of the office for the next week, and sent me back to the main outpatients number. I still don't have a result. This is the reality of "our NHS". I wish I could afford to go private.

The function of smell is to alert us to changes in our environment, so you’d notice if a place suddenly stopped smelling, for instance. All of these statements rely on a disparity in sensory stimuli anyway. Someone would only remark about darkness or quietness if they had just been somewhere brighter or louder. Smell is the same - you are only consciously aware of significant shifts. A better comparative sentence would be “Finally, some fresh air”, which is an entirely normal thing to say and would still designate an absence of odour. Also, in one of his most famous essays, “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again”, David Foster Wallace writes of being disturbed that his cruise ship cabin has no odour, noting that it is one of the very few totally odourless places he’s ever been and that it gives him the creeps. I have a smell quote for everything.

@gavmarten If she asked her conveyancing solicitor a question about SDLT and trusts then she's naive for expecting the solicitor to know, and the solicitor is an idiot for trying to answer.

It's very unusual for someone to pay the wrong amount of stamp duty when they're receiving tax advice. There are probably three possibilities: (1) Ms Rayner got the law wrong (2) She didn't take the right advice (3) She didn't disclose all the facts to the law firm.

@CliveWismayer Strictly speaking, yes. But it tends to sound rather old fashioned, these days. Personally, I only use "whom" when preceded by a preposition, i.e., by whom, to whom, from whom. You wouldn't say, by he, to he or from she.
