AI is probably the most anticipated, theorized, pre-imagined, written-about technology humankind has ever created. Whereas the internet almost entirely took futurists and sci-fi writers by surprise.

Now there's a scifi premise. Malicious entities that depend on logic-trapping people to gain power over them always found it easy to co-opt high-functioning elites. But gestalt organisms - where the consciousness is emergent but individual units are kinda dumb, so there's no easy "in" - prove impervious. The humans' technologically-mediated version defeats them for the same reason.
