Stopped by Shipley Do-Nuts this morning for the kids’ donuts and ended up in the Veterans Corner. One of the men recognized the @tcreporter truck and asked if I was the new host. The owner, Steve, asked if I played dominoes and I told him I hadn’t since high school. He shared with me that they’re here every single morning. Same table and game, and that his dad (sitting right across from him) is one of the regulars. Steve runs the whole place, makes donuts, takes care of his people, and then sits down and plays a few hands with his guys. That’s a good life. When they asked what I thought about my job, I told them I see it as trying to put more good news on TV to help balance all the bad. Steve’s dad looked at me and said, “Thank you for saying that. We need more of that.” We all agreed that we’ve got to get back to a time when we all just sit around a table and talk to each other. They invited me to come back and play. I told them I would’ve loved to this morning, but the kids were waiting on their donuts at home. Reading the newspaper and magazines (no devices!) as a family is our Saturday ritual. I’ll be back though!
