The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau protects regular folks against corporate special interests trying to rip them off. Which has made it, naturally, a target for Musk, MAGA, and now Russell Vought. But their strategy to gut it suggests a way to fight back. 🧵

Vought just set up a “tipline” so Americans can report abuses—not by corporations, but by the CFPB itself. He claims it’s been “weaponized.” Vought is targeting CFPB workers who are just doing their jobs of investigating companies breaking the law. realclearpolitics.com/articles/2025/…

This is the MAGA strategy—spread lies that vital government agencies are somehow the enemy… in order to protect those who are trying to fleece the public. More than 7.7M Americans have been aided by the CFPB in just the last 3 years.

Remarkably, you can read about all the scams the CFPB have heard about, and the ways they’ve helped people. Check out their Consumer Complaint Database. This is what the GOP is trying to crush—consumer help. consumerfinance.gov/data-research/…

@benwikler CFPB was created like 5 mins ago in the sweeping arc of the history of our grand republic. I’d hardly call that vital. I wonder how Ma & Pa Ingalls from ‘Little House on the prairie’, Martha Washington, Bess Truman, Booker T. Washington, and Rosa Parks did without it?
