Uganda's Kampala-Jinja Expressway (KJE) is poised to become East Africa's fastest road upon its completion in the coming years. With a design speed of 120 km/h, the 73-kilometer main section will surpass Kenya's Nairobi-Thika highway (110 km/h) and match the speed limit of sections of South Africa's N1 and N14 highways. The project is in the procurement and advanced preparatory stages, with a possible start of physical works reported to begin in 2026 after years of delays. The KJE's 95-kilometer total length (including a 77km mainline and an 18km southern bypass connecting to the Entebbe Expressway) will be built in two phases. Phase one covers 33 kilometers from Kampala to Namataba, along with the Kampala Southern Bypass. Phase two will complete the remaining 43.7 kilometers from Namataba to Jinja. The initial 4 kilometers from Kinawataka will have 8 lanes, followed by 6 lanes to Mukono, and then 4 lanes to Jinja. The estimated cost of the project is USD 1.1 billion. Your thoughts?
