Buried WWII Gold Unearthed In the shadow of rising Nazi terror, Martin Sulzbacher made a desperate bid for survival in 1938, fleeing anti-Semitic persecution in Germany with his wife Gertrud and their four young children. The Jewish family sought refuge in Hackney, a working-class borough in East London, bringing with them their life savings converted into 80 gleaming American $20 gold Double Eagle coins, minted between 1854 and 1913. Valued for their portability and stability amid economic chaos, these coins—each weighing about an ounce of pure gold—were initially secured in a local bank vault, a safeguard against the uncertainties of exile. But as World War II erupted in September 1939, the Sulzbachers’ fragile new life unraveled further. The British government, wary of potential spies among refugees from Axis nations, classified Martin as an “enemy alien” despite his victimhood under the Nazis. In July 1940, he was deported aboard the SS Arandora Star, bound for internment in Canada. Tragedy struck when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship off the Irish coast, sinking it and claiming over 800 lives. Martin survived hours clinging to debris in the frigid Atlantic before being rescued and taken to Scotland. Just a week later, he was shipped onward to Australia, joining around 2,000 other Jewish refugees in remote internment camps, where he endured harsh conditions until his release in 1942. Meanwhile, back in Britain, Martin’s family faced their own ordeals. His wife and children were interned on the Isle of Man, a common fate for many “enemy aliens” deemed low-risk. In Hackney, Martin’s elderly parents Max and Meta, along with his brother Fritz, remained at the family home on Kyverdale Road. As the Blitz rained destruction on London in 1940, Fritz grew increasingly fearful. Learning that the Sulzbacher name appeared on an SS hit list for execution in the event of a German invasion, he withdrew the gold coins from the bank and buried them in two glass jars in the back garden, marking the spots with subtle landmarks like a tree and a wall. Only the immediate family knew of this secret cache, intended as a hidden legacy for survival. Devastation followed. On October 13, 1940, a German bomb struck the Sulzbacher home during an air raid, killing Max, Meta, and Fritz instantly. The blast obliterated the house and scattered debris, erasing the burial markers. Martin’s wife and children survived their internment and were released, but upon Martin’s return to London in 1942, the family searched in vain for the lost gold amid the rubble. The treasure remained buried and forgotten for decades. The story resurfaced dramatically in 1952, when builders working on the rebuilt property unearthed a small number of the coins. Traced back to Martin Sulzbacher through historical records, they were returned to him as rightful property, not classified as treasure trove under British law since the owner was identifiable. Martin, who had rebuilt his life as a bookseller in London, passed away in 1981, never knowing the full hoard lay just beneath the surface. It wasn’t until 2007 that the Hackney Hoard fully emerged. While digging a frog pond in the same backyard, the home’s current resident—a man named Terence Castle—struck a buried jar, revealing the remaining 80 gold Double Eagles in remarkably pristine condition. Valued at around £80,000 ($100,000 at the time), the coins sparked a coroner’s inquest, which confirmed their origin with the Sulzbacher family. Martin’s descendants, including grandson Stephen, successfully claimed the hoard, which was later auctioned for over $154,000, with proceeds shared among the family and the discoverer. One coin was donated to Hackney Museum, where it stands as a poignant artifact of resilience. The Hackney Hoard encapsulates a tale of persecution, survival, and serendipity—a tangible link to the horrors of WWII and the enduring hope of those who fled tyranny.
