@levelsio @hispanicnomad He even calls Garda as in Gardameer as way better, like that's the default camping spot for Dutch normies. Garda, out of so many better Italian places.

A lot of "Big brand" cities in Europe are actually quite bad, and I always recommend people to skip them 🇧🇪 Brussels 🇩🇪 Berlin 🇬🇧 London 🇳🇱 Amsterdam 🇮🇹 Rome… Overrated There are WAY better options hiding in plain sight: 🇵🇱 Wrocław 🇵🇹 Porto 🇨🇿 Prague 🇭🇺 Budapest 🇮🇹 Garda Social media told me each one was boring, irrelevant, or "not worth the trip"... And every single time, reality was the opposite Don't get carried away by "popular knowledge". It's almost always wrong

@MomentProCamera The trick is to photograph the Matterhorn at sunrise, not at sunset, much better natural light for this pose.

Yankees! When the Dutch founded New Amsterdam in the 1600s, many settlers had common Dutch names such as Jan and Kees. English settlers and soldiers began referring to the Dutch colonists collectively as Jan Kees, essentially meaning “John Kees” or “Dutchman.” Over time the pronunciation shifted. Jan Kees became something that sounded like Yankees in English. The term was first used by the British as a nickname for Dutch settlers in the New York area. Later it spread to refer to people from New England and eventually to Americans in general. Because New York began as a Dutch colony, the idea that Yankee comes from Jan Kees connects directly to the city’s early Dutch elite and settlers who shaped its foundations. Names like Van Cortlandt, Schuyler, Van Rensselaer, and Stuyvesant are reminders of how deeply Dutch culture influenced what would later become New York.

@avstorm Last week I attended a session about how much effort is involved in keeping the colors of devices consistent. It's quite a science.

Jan and I were front row at the Fogra Colour Management Symposium 2026 in Munich last week. Here's why it mattered. You take a photo on your iPhone, Pixel, or any modern smartphone. It looks vivid, sharp, high contrast. You send it to print. It comes back flat. Most people blame the printer. The real issue starts much earlier. The same problem hits the small bakery designing their own flyers — uncalibrated screen, low-res image, PDF sent straight to press. A genuine step forward in print-on-demand. A genuine disappointment when the result arrives. The printer isn't to blame either time. This is the daily reality for printing companies receiving files not made by experts. Not a niche problem — millions of prints, every day. At Viesus AG, our world is image enhancement. We work on the image or PDF before it reaches the press — recovering tonal range, enhancing detail, giving the output device the best possible input. Not a substitute for colour management. The step that makes colour management's job more impactful and the final result better. We're also working on something new in this space. Not ready to share yet — but soon. The symposium confirmed what we already believed: image quality and colour management aren't separate topics. The printing companies treating them as one integrated challenge are the ones whose output truly matches intent.

@5ervi @danbarker @philnoble1 I assume the skill of the photographer lies in his experience, and - amongst other things - that perhaps means deliberately leaving the red eye filter off

@BenjiNaesen My 5-year-old consumer Garmin lets my partner track me when I cycle alone in the mountains. It even has crash detection and an incident procedure. What's the big deal? Muriel Furrer left a deep mark here in the community, we should learn from it out of respect for her.

Great that the UCI and teams have managed to agree on the implementation of mandatory GPS tracking for riders, 1.5 years after the death of Muriel Furrer. Oh wait, they haven't. 🤷‍♂️ Start caring about safety over ownership and profits.

So Norsgaard in the "Forhjulslir" podcast says that when Søren Kragh crashed in provence and fell over the edge, the motorbike following him didn't wait or alert anyone. So Søren saw the motorbike and then the entire peloton pass by and realised no one would likely notice him. ⬇️

yes understand, in my opinion, red-eye isn't part of the scene, it's a camera artifact created by flash reflecting off the retina. No human has glowing red pupils in real life (right?). It's not retouching the subject, it's correcting the tool. Think it is allowed as we deliver the technology to the industry.

Yes, so above I've uploaded the two JPEGs, one with the HDR data and one without. Then I checked what X does with the image after uploading. They apply quite aggressive compression and strip metadata (including the HDR data). It doesn't work in the iOS app either. Saving a few bucks by removing a better immersive visual experience for users doesn't seem balanced against the costs of other resource intensive features imo.

@5ervi @X @Apple I don't see a difference on my M4 MacBook Pro on web, but I'm pretty sure I've seen HDR images before on X on web, maybe they're removed support?

Just testing how @X handles @Apple HDR data with images. Most modern browsers should support it nowadays but not every display, website or app. Do you see a difference between the two images on your display?

@X @Apple Left window: image displayed on @X in Safari. Right window: same image displayed directly in Safari. Cannot screenshot it, obviously, since that removes the HDR data.

@X @Apple It seems that @X is stripping them away, a missed opportunity, since the visuals are much more immersive.

@VerdeSelvans Bit unfair comparison as X removes some image data which makes the iPhone 17 Pro look less immersive. Compare the two images on a recent MacBook display. Example: x.com/5ervi/status/2…

@Ashley0sc @politicalmath I don't know yet. I now still listen to music from the era when I stopped using my iPod, I guess around the time when I got the iPhone 3GS. It brings back good memories, and like having this "Time Machine".

I'm so frustrated at being a parent in this garbage digital age. I hate short-form video. TikTok / YouTube trash is just pure brain-rot and I can't stand it. I try to keep my kids away from it. I gave them access to Spotify b/c I want them to enjoy music and develop their musical tastes and personalities. That was working pretty well. They would go onto Spotify on the XBox and listen to music and explore that space. Good for them. But what does Spotify do? They put short form videos into their app. Now my kids are watching the videos instead of listening to the music. I have to decide if I have to take Spotify away from them (along with all their playlists) because Spotify pulled this bait-and-switch on me and turned an app that I felt good about giving to my kids into another brain-rotting platform of garbage. Every month something like this happens. It's impossible to navigate this as a parent, even if you're largely on top of things. It's exhausting and dispiriting.
