lion hunting as it takes place in Africa, typically targets very select individuals, and brings in massive amounts of money to the locally economy. Meaning more of a conservation-based approach to management rather than eradication.  Traditionally, the lions would be killed by the locals because they competed for game and would kill livestock, incurring a very real and very high costs to them. Not to mention lions are dangerous and occasionally kill people. So the locals don’t really want the lions around. But now with sport hunters valuing lions, the locals are incentivized to both protect and value the lions themselves. The money brought in pays for Game Warden and anti-poaching efforts, It can offset costs to locals who lose livestock to the lions, and  it also spread some money around to the local economy when the hunters come in and spend it. A lion hunt is not a cheap venture.
