@SimonMagus East London Mosque is a ridiculous target. It bends over backwards to try to welcome the wider community - running scout groups etc. Open day there was fascinating.

@WarGit Its also that the white voters here tend to be relatively transient, privately renting professionals in flats who show little interest in local elections. Bangladeshi origin folk much more settled.

I've read a bit on politics in Tower Hamlets over the years, as well as hearing from on the ground, and as I understand it the core dynamic in TH is that the B'deshi community can, uniquely, be mobilised to vote en bloc, and will only vote for candidates from the same group.
Simon Cooke@SimonMagus

Not going to delete it but the stats here are incorrect. There are 34% of Tower Hamlets residents who are Bangladeshi. Still quite shocking, however, that Bangladeshi councillors are over 80% of the full council. And that all the council cabinet and mayor are Bangladeshi

@DaveMorgan25 As I thought it might do, the vast over promising is coming back to bite them. Janet Daby was constantly appearing at Kinship carer groups before the election promising increased support but has delivered precisely nothing (or negative given support fund cuts).

Can’t believe how disappointing this government has been on so many levels, but especially children. Get money is tight; instead the government is scrapping focused spend on children who need it and instead throwing money away on generalised freebies. Hope the votes are worth it
Pippa Crerar@PippaCrerar

EXCL: Hundreds of thousands of children with special needs could lose their legal entitlement to extra support in schools in England under plans being considered by ministers - @alethaadu reports theguardian.com/education/2025…

@FraserNelson Certainly in Blackpool, which tops the leader board, your assumption that there is plentiful work is misguided. A family member works in a 'full time' job in the tourist industry but it was quiet last week so he only got 12 hours. How do you keep a family on that without top ups?

The below figures are hard to believe. A quarter of Birmingham, UK's second city, now on out-of-work benefits? That’s where unemployment peaked in 1933: and we called that a Great Depression. And Manchester: booming, employers desperate for staff. Yet one in five on the dole.

@christiancalgie It's not about the data. If people look around their communities and still see the migrant HMOs and hotels, big groups of men hanging round the streets and dodgy vape shops, they will draw their own conclusions.

I’d net migration isn’t down to at least 100,000 by the end of this parliament, these reforms will do nothing to stop the bleed to Reform

@Seoirse_ The Wetherspoons hotel (Keavan's Port) often has good deals but is not a cheap city.

@DJSkelton It may do because he is pretending that the problem can be solved by building more high rises in Manchester City Centre and Tower Hamlets.

@wallaceme One of the reasons why the high street is dying. This level of loss is too much for a small business to bear.

Depressing to see unimpeded, undeterred criminality in London go completely unremarked - 5 mins in a Costa and three different people have walked in, filled their arms with stuff from the fridge and just walked out. The staff know but apparently see no point reporting it.

@EddieRobson Exactly the same as people who move to live on the side of a country village green then complain about cricket being played on the green in front of their house and chickens making early morning noise nearby. These people infuriate me

@OliAworth96 If it is is a dormant company it might be less hassle all round to just get it shut down (obviously not that easy if it has trading debts).

@JoeAlex52503622 @RobParsonsNorth Demographic change. When the long stay tourism market collapsed with cheap packages to Spain thousands of privately owned B&Bs became HMOs and low quality flats.

Not directed at anyone in particular - but Scott Benton's Blackpool South seat is NOT the 'red wall' It's been held by the Tories for most of its existence

@RobParsonsNorth Blackpool has changed a little since the tourism peak in the 50s and 60s with thousands of privately owned B&Bs turned into HMOs. Do visit the town and find out - it is still a lot of fun.

@tomhatton1 This is sadly really common. Local Greggs now has all the sarnies behind the counter as people were walking in and stealing handfuls.

@DaveMorgan25 Seems a strange choice. Was it back to the 80s where the armchair members went for the attractive and personable young man they would like their daughters to marry?
