March 21, 1918: Operation Michael – German Spring Offensive On March 21, 1918, Germany launched Operation Michael, the opening phase of its major Spring Offensive on the Western Front in World War I. With Russia out of the war, Germany redeployed troops westward and aimed to break through Allied lines before American forces fully arrived. Over 1 million German soldiers, supported by massive artillery barrages, attacked British positions in the Somme region. Initial gains were significant—advancing up to 40 miles in places—but supply issues, exhaustion, and stiffening Allied resistance halted progress by late March.
