Social media use during duty hours is indeed a perfectly valid concern, and the government may well have other legitimate issues prompting this initiative too. Nuanced, targeted, localised, and contextualised strategies over a blanket ban is more likely to deliver sustainable improvements in patient care, staff efficiency, and professionalism. Some of the strategies used effectively elsewhere include: 1. Employer-provided secure devices with MDM (mobile device management) to whitelist clinical apps/EHR access while blocking social media sites/apps during shifts. 2. Geofenced restrictions (e.g., block non-essential apps in clinical areas like EDs) to allow urgent professional comms but prevent scrolling.

@AcademicEM @MaryamNSharif Well said and pertinent suggestions. But I guess here Her initiative is for the use of social media during duty hours which is a complete distraction, leading to careless attitude and irresponsible behaviour of the staff

Doctors and staff at all public sector hospitals across Punjab, have been strictly instructed not to use mobile phones or personal devices during duty hours. Patient care must take absolute priority, and patients’ time must not be squandered. My Inspection teams are conducting surprise visits round the clock to the hospitals to ensure full compliance. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against any violations.

You have highlighted a significant localised and contextualised perspective which further highlights that using mobile devices in healthcare settings is a complex issue. It requires proper discussion for a nuanced and balanced approach, guided by evidence, behavioural insights, and patient perspectives, to achieve discipline without hindering vital progress towards tech/AI-driven care in resource-constrained systems like Punjab/Pakistan. #MaryamNawaz #PunjabHealth

The most hilarious thing about 'ban on mobile phone for doctors' is that Lahore's largest tertiary care hospital does not provide radiology films to patients and doctors are asked to get it on phones via whatsapp. These moron bureacrates have zero link to ground reality 😭

Pagers are a reliable, low-distraction option still used in some healthcare systems globally (e.g., parts of NHS & US hospitals for critical alerts). However, in fast-paced EDs, evidence shows pagers often lead to delays & incomplete info: studies report faster response times with smartphones/secure messaging (often ~2–3 min medians vs. longer pager loops), better coordination (e.g., most staff report improved teamwork via apps), & reduced errors through real-time sharing of images, labs, or consults. Pagers excel for one-way alerts but lack bidirectional dialogue, EHR integration, or AI tools for transcription/notes/workflow optimisation. A balanced policy using pagers for urgent alerts + secure government-issued devices/apps for complex communication, driven by evidence & behavioural insights, could maintain discipline while enabling tech/AI progress that’s highly desirable & potentially revolutionary in resource-constrained systems like Punjab’s public hospitals. #MaryamNawaz #PunjabHealth

Punjab Govt’s commitment to making patient care the absolute priority in Punjab’s public hospitals is commendable. However, a complete ban on mobile devices risks removing a vital tool for ED doctors & staff and calls for a more nuanced approach. Mobile devices aren’t just used for calls anymore. They’re essential tools providing real-time access to guidelines, drug databases, EHRs for efficient documentation, & increasingly AI for tasks such as transcription/notes, workflow optimisation, reducing admin burden & freeing hours for direct patient interaction, as evidenced in latest studies. A balanced approach, driven by evidence and behavioural insights, could achieve discipline without hindering vital progress towards tech/AI-driven care—highly desirable and potentially revolutionary in resource-constrained systems like Punjab’s public hospitals. Patient care deserves both focus and the best tools! #MaryamNawaz #PunjabHealth

Extremely interesting proposal by Wang Yi in his speech that I haven't seen anyone talk about yet: he proposed to merge the Belt and Road Initiative with Europe's own version of it. That's the quote: "China is willing to synergize high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, so as to empower each other and empower the entire world." Europe should really consider it. Unbeknownst to most, China made the same proposal to the US at the start of the BRI (which goes to show it wasn't done in the spirit of undermining the US as many claim) and the US flatly rejected the offer. Later, John Kerry (Secretary of State at the time) said this was one of the biggest mistakes of his career. Maybe Europe should not make the same mistake...

Nobody seems to have come up with a full transcript of Wang Yi, China's top diplomat, at the Munich Security Conference so I have made one pekingnology.com/p/wang-yi-at-m…
