On this Day - 1940, U-99 under Captain Otto Kretschmer, sank the British armed merchant cruiser HMS Laurentic, off the Irish coast. Laurentic, an 18,000 ton former passenger liner, had been converted in the autumn of 1939 and armed with deck guns, depth charges and AA. #OTD

During the attack on RAF Tangmere, American volunteer Pilot Officer William Fiske of No. 601 Squadron saw his Hurricane fighter hit and a fire broke out in the cockpit. He crash landed at Tangmere and was brought out of the plane alive, but died the next day from surgical shock. 1/7
