I keep seeing this dumb take all over this site. California was "part of Mexico" because the Spanish colonized it in the 1500s. It was a colonial property of a European country, you dumbasses. Mexico owned California independent of Spain for like 20 years before they lost the Mexican-American war. California has been a part of the United States almost ten times longer than it was a part of an independent Mexico. Learn some basic world history.
