ADI is pleased to share that WHO and PAHO have selected Mexico, along with Brazil and The Gambia, as a priority country to implement a one-year, USD 100,000 seed-funded initiative to strengthen national capacity for early detection, diagnosis, comprehensive care, and support for dementia. As part of ADI Regional Director for the Americas Diego Aguilar’s official visit to Mexico, a working meeting was held at the PAHO country office with the participation of the Mexican Federation of Alzheimer (FEDMA), represented by its Chair, Dora Quezada, and Rosa Farrés, ADI Board Member. The session was opened by Dr. José Moya, PAHO Country Representative in Mexico, and facilitated by Dr. Vivian Pérez, Advisor on Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health. Also participating were Dr. Carmen García Peña, Director of the National Institute of Geriatrics (INGER), Dr. Mariana López Ortega and Dr. Francisco Flores (INGER), and Dr. Miguel Ángel Díaz from the Ministry of Health. The discussion focused on advancing implementation efforts and addressing the challenges currently facing the deployment of the National Dementia Plan in Mexico, reinforcing collaboration between public health authorities and civil society partners. On 26 February, ADI Regional Director for the Americas, Diego Aguilar, joined a corporate roundtable hosted by AMIIF in Mexico City to share key updates of ADI's work in the region. The discussion brought together regional representatives from Roche, Lilly and Biogen to review ADI’s 2026–2031 strategic priorities, including: • Extension of the WHO Global Action Plan on Dementia to 2031 • Dementia’s inclusion in the UN Political Declaration on NCDs • Progress on National Dementia Plans across Latin America • Key findings from the 2025 World Alzheimer Report on rehabilitation The roundtable featured participation from Karla Báez, CEO of AMIIF, and Rosa Farrés, ADI Board Member, reinforcing strong multi-stakeholder collaboration to advance dementia policy and innovation in the region.

ADI is pleased to learn that Argentina has officially launched its National Dementia Plan. With an estimated 500,000 people living with dementia in the country, this represents important and much-needed progress for people living with the condition, their carers, and society as a whole. The plan is structured around six key pillars and, importantly, includes a focus on risk reduction and shared risk factors with other non-communicable diseases. On the news, ADI Regional Director for the Americas, @DiegoAguilar_78, said: “We welcome the launch of Argentina’s National Dementia Plan as an important step toward strengthening the country’s response to dementia. The development of comprehensive national strategies is essential to ensure coordinated action across health, social care, and community systems. Ahead of ADI’s 2026 Global Conference in Lyon, ADI CEO Paola Barbarino spoke with HQ Magazine about ADI’s global impact, the strength of its membership, and the legacy the conference aims to deliver. On the upcoming conference, Paola said: "The Global Conference 2026 in Lyon, from 14 to 16 April, will be an opportunity to reaffirm dementia as a global scientific priority as well as a public health and social concern. The conference will spotlight cutting-edge dementia research, from new treatments and care innovations to efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination. The legacy we wish to leave is a tangible one. France remains without a standalone national dementia policy, placing it at odds with most other G7 countries and with its commitment to the WHO Global Action Plan in 2017 and 2025; our hope for this conference is to secure firm commitments from the French Government to develop and implement such a plan, ensuring people living with dementia and carers receive the support they deserve." ADI CEO, Paola Barbarino, and Head of Membership, Laura Aubert, conducted a two-day country visit to Morocco. The first day was dedicated to a meeting with the Board members of our member association, Association Maroc Alzheimer (AMA), followed by a visit of the Alzheimer day care centre in Rabat - a valuable opportunity to better understand the realities on the ground and the support provided to people living with dementia and their families. The second day featured a high-level meeting bringing together other local associations, health professionals, as well as representatives from the Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Inclusion, and Family, and the World Health Organization Morocco office. This was the first time all these stakeholders had come together to discuss dementia, marking an important step toward stronger dialogue, coordination, and national collaboration on these issues. Participants also expressed a shared commitment to work together in advancing the development of a National Dementia Plan. ADI thanks AMA for its warm hospitality and commitment to organising this successful high-level meeting and country visit.

Our friends at Global Brain Health Institute have asked us to share a consensus study to define a set of promising practices for engaging both people with dementia and care partners in advocacy and research, ensuring that future dementia research and advocacy efforts can be truly inclusive of voices with lived experience. If you are living with dementia or carer, register by 6 February to take part in the study: bit.ly/4q26IEH Using a modified Delphi method, the study is designed to generate and categorise promising practices, using input from expert opinion, existing evidence, and other resources. This consensus-building approach ensures that all participants have an equal voice. The study will be conducted through 3 brief online surveys during February to April, with insights from the promising practices study in July 2026 at Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) in London by Portland State University. The study builds upon sessions previously conducted at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) in Toronto in July 2025, the Walking the Talk for Dementia Symposium in Santiago de Compostela in August 2025, and the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI), Trinity College Dublin in October 2025. The lead organizations are the GBHI Trinity College Dublin; Engagement of People with Lived Experience of Dementia (EPLED-Canada); Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI); and Alzheimer’s Society (UK).
