People ask why I joined ICAC. It involves my trick back exacerbated by patrol, getting a fixed schedule with weekends off so I could watch my kids play sports, and wanting a righteous gig, among other things. But that's too long to explain so usually I just say I lost a bet.

I have much respect for authors who have kept book series alive and fresh over the years. Was thinking about this recently when I was writing a plot device in my third novel that I thought was rather clever and then realized I had already used it in my first novel.

When I order at the taco truck, the worker often gives me a quick once-over and says, "Mild salsa?" I resent that automatic assumption. I mean, I do want mild, every time, but they don't know that. Far as they know, I could be King of the Habaneros. Do I really look that soft?
