My older daughter regularly wins at family games of Clue. I find this disconcerting because I have 20 years of experience investigating violent felonies whereas she is 11.

I often find myself using "The old" in conversation whenever someone says something to me I don't understand or have nothing to add to: "He's a hedge fund guy." "The old hedge fund." "It's clearly some kind of sex cult." "The old sex cult." "The power is supplied via a split-phase system with two 120V hot wires that are 180 degrees out of phase." "The ol' hot wire."

"Honey, the train is coming." "We still have time! I'll be quick." Pigeon sex. ("Love birds" sounds better, I suppose). 30th Ave station is totally overrun with pigeons 🐦 (which isn't necessarily bad, if you like them). Somebody dumps food under the stairs, which isn't good.

My police dept. won't welcome this news but today I formally entered the 2026 NBA draft. I know 52-year-old off-guards aren't super common, but I hustle & box out & in the winter of '89, I dropped 16 points off the bench for my JV team. 7 for 8 from the field, pair of free throws

@MidwestSafetyYT @AdamPlantinga Unfortunately our prison system, like our police, are irredeemably corrupt, violent, traumatic, white supremacist, homophobic, ableist, classist, and serve capital instead of people or safety. Discussions of justice must start with dismantling these systems.

Seen on the sidewalk in the city I police. For sure. Many of us have a friend or family member who is an addict and we support them. But the message can't end there. You may also hold the addict accountable. And how about next time use chalk instead of paint.

One of the benefits of Thrillerfest is reconnecting with old work buddies. Had dinner with a good friends and great detective… …who brought an interview report from a 15 year old case, telling me the US Attorney is charging a guy and I need to be interviewed. I basically got served by one of my oldest friends.

Recently learned my first two novels are going to be translated into Japanese. It was perhaps inevitable that I would catch on in Japan. I have much to offer other cultures.

For two decades I carried and gun and shield in the service of NYC. Men I arrested for terrible crimes will die in prison. I’ve testified in state and federal court, made case law. But when I travel alone my wife has to choose my outfits based on activity and weather because I cannot be trusted to dress myself. Thrillerfest here I come.

@AdamPlantinga Have you seen how important people make grown men playing ball? Why demean whole massive industries with huge fan because ultimately it's frivolous to you. Shooting hoops is a game and yet can beautiful and exciting to watch, flopping and all. Same for fashion.

When I see coverage of something like the Met Gala, I recall these Chuck Klosterman words: "I can understand how a person might find fashion interesting, in the same way I understand how a person might be interested in calligraphy. But the notion that fashion is somehow important makes me want to throw up."

@kar_nels @AdamPlantinga The parallels between fashion and sports have always seemed pretty obvious. Billion dollar industries, millions of obsessive fans, all in pursuit of nothing particularly useful.
